Finished The Balvenie Caribbean Cask last night. Into a Dalmore 12 tonight. The Dalmore has deeper color and a smoother finish. So far it's my favorite.

I asked a few store clerks, their eyes just kinda glazed over. I finally picked the bottle and went to the cashier who had high praises for it.

Quite smooth, with a bit of the peat I enjoy, but just that subtle hint of sweet plum wine (maybe it's all in my head) made this a nice choice. My first non-Scotland Scotch purchase.

It's my birthday this weekend too, so I ended up getting both Glenlivet 15 and Glenfiddich 15 to help celebrate.

For some reason, not 1 but 2 of my gifts this weekend consisted of a USC shirt wrapped around a bottle of Jack. And while I scolded my wife that it would have been much more appropriate for it to read "Old No. 48" instead of Old No. 7, the black birthday cake had the Jack label on it.

I also got a Vikings mug

Bought a Laphroaig Triple Wood yesterday. Might be a bit too peaty for my tastes, but we'll see.

I suspect it might be, based on how your preferences seem to lean in past posts, but keep an open mind - you might surprise yourself!

Myself I don't lean to Laphroig / Lagavulin, however, I do have them on occasion and don't mind them...they just aren't typically bottles I'd buy - more like I'll buy a glass of them when I'm out on certain occasions.

The factor that swayed me to buy is one of the 3 barrels is a sherry barrel and supposedly this scotch, if left unmolested, exhibits a syrupy vanilla tone at first and a smooth finish. We'll see if I find that to be true.

So in my short career as a scotch connoisseur I think I have a favorite that doesn't break the bank but has the attributes I enjoy. The Jameson 12 I think has the best bang for the buck. Less than $50 a bottle for heavenly smoothness. Does anyone have any suggestions for something that is like it?

Smooth sounds good. I'll have to try it.

^ You might be pleasantly surprised with a Dalwhinnie 12. I used to get them at Trader Joe's for under $40. (Not specific to TJs, just where I bought)

Will need a double tonight to dull the pain of the worst sunburn I've had in years. I feel like an idiot for forgetting my sunscreen.

Opened the Laphroaig Triple Wood tonight. Whoa. Much different experience than the Balvenie or Dalmore. Sort of like drinking runoff from a barn fire. May take awhile to get through this bottle.

Opened a Macallan 12 tonight. Not bad at all. Quite smooth. Not as much sweetness as the Balvenies, but still a nice finish.

Try to get your hands on a Macallan select oak. Its not expensive and may in fact be sold widely in the States, but the only place I can get it here is when I'm traveling and thus I find it in the duty free store.

I would think that it may not be as sweet as a Balvenie (though I haven't had one in a while), but I think it is sweeter than the 12 (though I do really quite love the 12).

I think you may enjoy the Select Oak as well...just a nice balance, good everyday drinking scotch. Should be about $55 for 1L in the duty free...may even find it for less somewhere else.

When I'm down in Mexico in December I intend on picking up some more.

Thanks, I'll try to find it. There are two liquor superstores in Champaign, so hopefully one of them has it.

I finally got around to watching Skyfall last night. I see Bond is a fan of 50 Y.O. Macallan. Doubt I'll ever get to try it, but the 12 is pretty damn good. Especially with a splash of soda.

bought a glenmorangie nectar d'or the other day and actually got a glenmorangie signet as a gift from a client a few days later. i usually lean towards the lagavulins and laphroaigs but i really enjoyed the signet (i better for $150+ per bottle). nectar d'or was good but for some reason i prefer the campfire taste over the sweetness of the glenmorangie

I'm exactly opposite. I have a bottle of Laphroaig with just a few shots gone out of it just sitting there unused. Just can't adapt to the campfire taste. Normally I wouldn't waste a fine single malt on a cocktail, but the Laphroaig may be a candidate for that. Although I'm not sure any added liqueur can hide that smoke.

My wife picked up this bottle for my birthday this week. This one is new to me, so I can't wait to crack it open. Anyone tried it?

No, but it's on my "Buy" list. Maybe this weekend if get up to Champaign.

18 years old. Not a cheap bottle, I'm guessing. Should be very tasty.
