If the F30 to compare is the 320i then none of that is standard again. So the latest F30 320i compared with the latest E90 328i offered in the USA (with the Value Package) has these additional standard features:

- 8AT
- iDrive
- Eco/Comfort/Sport settings
- BMW Assist for 10 years
- Bluetooth Audio
- Center speaker

It lost the standard Leather seats (Value Package).
Hence the small price increase from '12-13.

I owned an E90 for 3 years prior to my F30 which I've now owned for 3 years. There's nothing cheaper about an F30. The materials are the same.

The F30 is 80% of what the E90 was. The 20% that is different is a big deal:

Torque: The turbo 4 is just a beast, so much faster off the line than the 6 it replaces, really throws you back in your seat.

Power: Once at speed, there's plenty more power to burst past other cars. I'll be driving on the highway completely oblivious to the fact that I'm doing 92 MPH and will have to slow myself down. It's effortless.

Transmission: The 8 speed auto is so much faster and smoother and accurate than the version it replaced. Because you don't have to stomp on the accelerator to get the car to move anymore, the transmission doesn't have to jerk wildly to get from 1st to 2nd to 3rd gear anymore.

Steering: It's lighter and easier. The car weighs less, so the combination of the weight reduction and the torque increase completely transforms how the car drives. It's effortless, requires a lot less effort and thought to get the car to go where you want it.

Experience Modes: This is not just savvy marketing, throwing the switch from Comfort to Sport changes the driving characteristics of the car completely, it feels like two different cars. Sport mode is crazy fun. Comfort mode is easier for the wife and kids stomachs. The E90 had neither. Was not as fun as Sport mode, was not as eased as Comfort mode. This is a big deal, not to be overlooked.

Size: The car has increased in size so there's a bit more shoulder room and rear passenger legroom but it doesn't feel bigger.

Audio System is upgraded. If you have a standard audio system in the E90 you'll be thrilled with the standard audio system in the F30 as it's the "enhanced" system they pay extra for in Europe.

Visibility is better: I find that the A pillar and B pillar location combined with new rear seatback position gives me a better overall view of the road.

It's more quiet: Not sure if it's the sound deadening material or better door seals but the F30 definitely has a more soundproofed cabin.

Interior looks and acts better: This myth about materials and quality you've read is BS. It's the same as the E90. What's different is the layout of the center stack, the integration of the wood and the dash components, the ambient lighting, the new cupholders, the thought that went into the storage compartments.

Great new standard equipment: The auto dimming mirrors, split-folding rear seat, power seats, garage door openers, and other throw-in's really make the experience better.

Technology: iDrive is now standard on all F30's. Nuff said. If you get the Technology Package, the head up display is crazy good and extremely functional.

Un-Bangled: The F30 has more refined sheetmetal, specifically the nose of the car which no longer looks like a Japanese pachinko machine.
What you've written are my thoughts exactly. Thank you for posting this.

Attention world: if you prefer the E90 for some reason, buy one. There are plenty of nice used ones out there.

I purchased my F30 335i after driving my E46 330xi for 6 years. At times, I miss my all-wheel drive and the smaller overall size, but the F30 brings new perks to 3er, like a more refined ride and a fantastic transmission to the game. It's still a sports sedan, and of course is light years ahead of my old 2003. The new car is better than the E90 IMO, and hopefully the post-LCI F30 will address the small issues drivers have with the car.

BMW moved the car forward, not everyone needs to own an F30 but there's no reason to put it down when it's an all-around better car. It happens with every change in generation. BMW prides themselves on this.
The F30 is the better all around car absolutely. I just don't think they improved everything. I can't say everything is better in my M3 than the previous M3 I've owned, etc. I don't see how offering praise and criticism is defensive. I'm not putting your car down. Just pointing out the things I've noticed that other F30, F10, and professional auto journalists have also noticed.

No offense, but I think it sounds defensive when you are so quick to go on the offensive - "you are needlessly defensive, nit-picking"

I dont think its nit-picking either. Things i like, things i dont like. Things I have observed. Just being constructive. Wouldn't stop me from buying the car. In fact, I plan to buy my wife an LCI. Like your post on another thread mentioned I think this car appeals to more buyers.

Suffering with my 2012 e92 w/o comfort access. What's the point of a start/stop button if I have to stick the key in the dash.
To me, that's a step backwards. The key is now bulky and requires battery. It's a cheaper key. The old one is much better.

I enjoyed having to insert the key below the start button. If I had to press a button anyway, why not insert a key below it while doing so.

I don't like that iDrive is considered a great value.

It's only good if you got Nav or tech package. The stock iDrive is so basic.

Compare an e90 gas tank cover & doors to an F30 and it feels much better quality- the doors on the f30 require much more force to get them closed. Other than that its a great car.

Never had an E90, but the F30 fuel filler door is weak. When I drive through the automated car washes (drying stage), I can see the fuel door filler flapping.

I do wish my '13 335i came with comfort access as standard.

Standard is a very relative term by country as well as model. Here the 3 series come with a steering wheel and engine. Everything else is extra...
