I think people are on the right track with a gti. Cheap, reliable, fun, efficient, practical. Get him something fun but that can take a beating. How much is he into cars, that can be a factor?

my first car was a e46 325ci, i think it was a great first car if you can find one that's been well maintained.. safe, good looking car, and not too much power so you don't get in too much trouble.

Midsize family sedan will be your best bet for safety which should be the number one priority. Civics, Corollas and Mazda3's, Scions and all others in that class are all too small and have very short frames.

SUV's and most trucks are also a no-no due to rollover risk.

Yeah dont make the mistake my dad made. We were looking at an A3, coming home from the Audi dealer, then we saw a 1er in the lot of our local BMW dealer.
Walked in, priced out a 128, then he said, "wait a minute so with the options were considering a 135 would only be 3 grand more. So why not get the fast one?"

Best and worst decision that hes ever made.

1985 Grand Marquis. Built like a tank and seriously uncool enough that there won't be showing off...assuming he can get it going. That was my first car...I hated it in a way, but appreciated it as well because it made me try hard in school to be able to afford something better.

On a more serious note, wouldn't go german. Probably want to stick with FWD for the understeer bias (rather than oversteer with a RWD car which is extremely fun, but probably not something he should have to watch out for when he's not expecting it and just learning). Also wouldn't go AWD because in spite of the traction, there (IMO) comes a false sense of security and he may wind up going to fast in winter and AWD doesn't help you brake any better.

So as others have mentioned, something small, probably Honda/Toyota/Ford is best...just adding my two cents that you probably want to stick with FWD.

A 16yo boy in Cali the insurance is going to kill him, Expect fill coverage on anything of value to be over 2K per year. Newer cars like listed are a shocker. Mught want to get a few hypothetical insurance quotes first or be perpared to take the insurance shuffle and list the car as you the driver and him only an occassional driver. Personally both my kids got beaters as their first cars (2000 Hyundai Sonata, and a 98 Escort) both as the primary driver insurance was a tad over 1K for my daughter (Hyundai) and 1400 for my son the Escort. They dropped my son the first ticket he got. Have fun it's that part that will drive you nuts.

My thoughts as well. Some people are suggesting late model BMW's also, which will not be cheap to insure for a 16 year old, and may be considered spoiling by some.
