Then in 2011 we were looking for a replacement for my old E36 convertible and settled on the E93 335i, so now I have a pretty good feeling for the features and advantages of each. The S5 is still my favorite daily driver, unless the sun is out and I can go topless. The interior of the BMW is not up to the same level as the Audi, even though it's 3 years newer. The iDrive is a mess. And the S5 is the only car I've ever had where people complement its design - strangers in parking lots and at gas station and even when stopped at a traffic light will say "nice car!" Haven't had that happen with a BMW since 1980 - the E90 family 3-series is just so common looking that it's almost invisible. But to be fair, much of my fondness for the S5 is due to the fact that it has a manual tranny whereas the BMW is auto ( a concession to the wife). I have not driven a manual 335i, but if it's anything like my old E36 then perhaps my judgement would change - the Audi manual tranny takes some getting used to, especially to do heel-and-toe properly.
when i had my S5 me and my friend who just got an Msport alpine white E92 335 were in a parking lot. his car was shiny brand spanking new still dealer plates, mine was filthy.
i gentlemen came up to me and asked about the s5, said it sounded amazing and was the most beautiful car hed ever seen (he was driving a bentley GT which i thought was quite comical, but understandable since id say the S5 shape is very similar to the GT) and when my friend blurted out "well what do you think about that bmw"....i will never forget his response "please, this car......it is NO COMPARISON".
my friend is very fond of the irony of me getting an E93 a few years later

What do you mean pulled on you, do you mean it was shortening the gap in 2nd or 3rd gear??

Enjoy when the timing chain guides break, and it costs you 10k to have the motor pulled and the chain repaired (because some idiot put the chain on the back of the motor).

I used to help out at a German shop (mostly for fun and experience, but I was paid), and we would laugh whenever a B6 or B7 S4 came in for chain problems.

The new B8 supercharged V6 is nice, but an Audi will never beat a Bimmer. I love both brands, but AWD leads to massive understear.

That and we don't drive a "luxury" marquis of any car, BMW is BMW. Plain as that. Audi is a fancy Volkswagen, and it retains of some the feel, and quality of build. I've never owned or worked on a car as well put together as a BMW.
I worked at an independent for a while out of college, and agree that the Audi cars we looked at were hands down the most over-engineered cars we saw. I forget which engine it was, but we had to do some timing work on it and couldn't figure out why there were so many tensioners for one chain. It was like VW couldn't figure out something and just kept throwing chain tensioners on it until the problem went away. After seeing that I swore to myself I'd never own a modern VAG car in my life.

That would have been the 4.2.

Their motors have always been a mess. Even the old 1.8's. Yeah they were reliable, but trying to work on them was an exciting ordeal. And watching the first release ones shred timing belts and kill themselves because Audio set the interval too high was funny.

I think the S5 is one of the best looking cars on the road.

And that 4.2 V8 sounds absolutely awesome. But the timing chain service alone scares me out of owning a car with that motor. Be a nice car to lease.

Big difference between the modified RS5 shown and a bog stock S5.

The 3.0T is such a better motor for daily driving (and tuning), and the 4.2 V8 in the B8 S5 isn't the same as the high revving version in the new RS5. The sound in the B8 is great, but I too would get the facelift S5 over the B8 any day, I also like the front end makeover. Gorgeous car and I frequently regret my purchase

I mean on a 40-100mph highway pull, he was about 1 car legnth in front of me.
Granted it is his daily and I'm sure he was More aggressively shifting gears (both 6mt) since I don't like being too harsh in a $180k car that isn't mine.
It was still def faster. After 100 I'm sure the r8 would have shined though

DI is DI and they'll all need cleaning. It really depends on how the car is being driven and really has nothing to do with the manufacturer.
yes.. an N54 fares somewhat better against carbon buildup than the old Audi 4.2L V8 and 3.2L V6.. My car has never had it cleaned, has spent most of its life in NYC traffic, and at 76k miles, isn't begging for a cleaning. Generally, most N54's make it this far and are not in dire need of cleaning. I am absolutely sure that the old N/A Audi engines need to be cleaned and suffer from buildup on much more frequent intervals than the turbocharged N54. When a 4.2 or 3.2 Audi engine needs to be cleaned, it refuses to start, misfires like crazy, and runs like its 20,000 feet above SL. Obviously when depends on driving style, but it does in fact depend on the manufacturer but mostly on the engine type. FI engines are less susceptible than N/A.. and if you're like Lexus and use secondary port injection, then carbon buildup might not be an issue at all.

Coming from a 2011 BMW to a 2012 Audi, I will never order another BMW until they can come even half as close to the style and interior quality of an Audi.

No comparison, BMW isnt even in the same league.

And to everyone comparing a Modded JB BMW to an stock Audi, what does that tell you? lol.

I bet to differ, it's good looking not best looking. Cayman, F-type and 911 all beat it.

you do have to acknowledge the v6's stock power/tuning potential. However, that's meaningless after hearing a sound like that!

Are you really comparing a 1 series to a TT-RS???
You need to compare it to an M3.

Just traded my sister's 09 S5 for a 335i after the warranty expired and the issues continued. We had issues from day one with the car, carbon build up, squeaks and rattles, jerky transmission (auto), electronic issues, stereo issues, MMI issues and on and on and on.
