Garage floor treatment

Because of theimpending arrival of wifey's 330 a week or two ago, I treated the garage to a 'clean sweep', gave it a few coats of white latex and slapped a few of my BMW posters up there. Now it looks like a BMW showroom but with trashcans and kids bikes.

I really want to do the floor. It is finished concrete with more than it's share of oil leak marks thank to GM's finest 1974 vintage.

Have any of you finished the floor? I really don't want to epoxy it because I'll be scubbing and etching for an eternity. What I'd really like to do is the black and white checkerboard tile.

Anyone done that? What did you use? Any advice? Thanks.

Well, places like Lowe's or Home Depot has those cheap (well, not cheap, but cheaper than ceramic tile) plastic tiles you could line the garage floor with. They're pretty good for cleanups, too.

Otherwise, an actual concrete "stain" I've found works best. It's NOT a paint...more of a stain, but it is awesome. You can find that at sherwin williams.

Steve:

Here's what I've done...

I used regular garage floor paint (~ $25.00) on my floor. However, as you know, if you don't etch the concrete with acid prior to painting, the paint will pull off from the tires. Plus, you have to wait 5-7 days before driving on the fresh paint

Soooo, what I did after painting (did not etch and waited only about 1 hour for drying), I purchased black indoor/outdoor carpet runners from Home Depot (4 of them since I have a two car garage @ $2 / linear foot), and used some epoxy to keep the ends in place. Now I have a clean garage floor and don't have to worry about the paint pulling up. Plus, the runners have channels which help to drain the water. Yes, my neighbors think I'm nuts, but I guess there is some truth to that!

This is the quickest, cheapest, and easiest way to get a good looking garage floor.

Hope this helps...

Check these guys out. I am thinking about having one of their dealers do something to my garage floor eventually.

I'm thinking about this mat to channel the water out the garage door.

http://www.autobarn.net/garfloorprot1.html

I put two part epoxy down on practically new concrete and it's holding well, but slush and mud still goes everywhere.

(I put the one part "basement" epoxy on the floor in the basement after etching - what a mistake. It wasn't dry enough and came out blotchy. If it's new, it doesn't need etching).
