Are Range Rovers really that unreliable???

I think the question is self-explanatory.
Did you guys hear any stories or had an experience with Range Rover?

05 and up seem to have a lot of problems. actually, ever since ford acquired the brand from BMW, the cars are a lot different.

we had an 03 HSE and now have an 08 supercharged (range rover) and the 03 definitely is missed, but at the same time, the 08 isnt bad either. theres minor things that irritate you with the 08 that the 03 didnt do. at least from our experience.

They are okay, the problem with them is the suspension, always breaking.

Over the years they've habitually been pretty bad in Consumer Reports in terms of reliability. Lot's of black dots. Are you asking about a particular model year?

Sounds like someone is considering them.
JD Powers has had them dead last or close to last for the last 10 years.

Awful. One of my former business partners had one (an '05 I think), and it was CONSTANTLY broken. Sometimes it was small stuff like the stereo or seats, but sometimes it was much worse, like the rear end, or strange electrical problems that would just kill it.

I'd stay away if you're planning on using it for anything more than a toy.

I've had 3 Range Rovers, The first two went well over 100k miles. The current one is at 70k miles and going strong (the only thing wrong with it is that the BMW sourced nav computer died. I didn't use it much anyhow, so I haven't bothered fixing it).

The air ride systems have been known to be problematic, but you can replace teh airbags with conventional springs, and elimintate that issue entirely (my last one had that done). Replacement bags and lines are cheap these days, though, so it's not quite as bad as it used to be.

BUT... if you have to have a dealer or independant mechanic work on them, you'll get raped. For example I put new spark plug wires on my current one. $45 for a set of high performance 8mm wires and an hour of my time. The independant shop wanted $500, and the dealer quoted $700. The previous owner did brake pads and rotors on it at the dealer to the tune of $2700. I could get the parts from Atlantic British for under $400 and do it myself.

I love these trucks however, and have driven all over the east coast in them, including offroad and towing my travel trailer.

My boss got one for his wife, Ranger Rover Sport 07. Had to have a supply of fuses in the car because they constantly blew. Hard to believe in this day and age that you would have this problem that couldn't be fixed by the dealer.

Dumped it last year for a RX400h.

I once dated a fellow who i think owned a 07 SC Range Rover Sport but i can't be certain since he didn't have it too often ......it was always in the dealership for one thing or another ???? I must say that when he did have it and it was working it was soo soo sexy to ride in I'd love to own one as well but i'd be so paranoid of the reliability issues that most have mentioned here

I had the self leveling suspension in the rear of my Disco. I put springs back there because of the high attrition rate of the airbag systems. If you see Range Rovers around looking like they're slammed either in the front, rear, or all fours, it's most likely that they're riding on their bump stops because of a system failure.

Other than that, they won't have more problems than your average automobile.

My friend has a sport supercharged the the full size supercharged ones..he hasn't had a problem with either and drives the piss out of them..

They're pretty nice trucks but i think its a little ridiculous to pay 110k otd for a rover that will be worth about half that in a year!

they have a well known and well deserved reputation

go x5 if you want suv onroad luxury

go jeep wrangler if you want to offroad with no frills

having owned both, they really are good at what they are made for

Yeah that's another thing. LR residuals suck ass.

Which circles back to them being unreliable. Everyone likes the way the look, so they should have decent resales but their reputation for horrible reliability kills their resale.

And the fact that they really aren't that bad makes them excellent used bargains, just like 7 series like mine.

the Land Rovers have a higher residual value percentage than the BMW SUVs.

http://trucktrend.automotive.com/973...uvs/index.html

Quote:
Land Rover has won two Residual Value Awards from the Automotive Lease Guide for the 2009-model-year vehicle lineup, which awards vehicles that will retain the highest percentage of their original price following a 36-month lease term. The 2009 Land Rover {{{Range Rover Sport}}} won the award for luxury SUVs, and the 2009 Land Rover {{{LR2}}} was the winner for the Near Luxury SUV class. The Range Rover Sport has been at the top of the luxury SUV list for the past four years; the LR2 is winning its first.

With two vehicles at the top of their respective categories, Land Rover has also placed fifth overall for the Luxury Brand Residual Value Ranking. In determining the winners, ALG looks at historical vehicle performances and industry trends, while also considering vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand, and pricing strategies. With these different variables, ALG forecasts residual values for all makes and models on the market.
Doesn't seem so bad at all.

I haven't checked on residual values of any models newer than '03.

One thing about LR's, like any luxury brand, is the fact that their options factor heavily into resale too.

Well I spent a morning traveling with a guy to the Porsche day who happened to be a two time Range Rover owner and though he said his first ones was quite good from a reliability front his second and current one has had it's injection system replaced twice and now has had a complete new engine replaced. He said it's been in the garage for most of the last two months.

Draw your own conclusions.
