does your car stink, smell, burn eyes, smoke with DPs

hello guys

Im planning about getting DPs, my wife is pregnant and a health freak. I know she will notice i got something new done on my car cuz DPs are a bit louder. I hear a lot of ppl say their car really stink when stopped at the light or in the garage, some ppl even say it smokes on occasion. are they just exaggerating ?

Any experience on this?

i plan on getting VRSF

If you care about your future child and pregnant wife, I would highly advise against getting catless downpipes now or in the near future.

Honestly I don't notice any difference in odor. Only slightly in sound. You still have a second set of cats in the middle of the car. It's not like a straight pipe car.

If the exhaust flapper is closed I bet she won't ever notice. As far as smell, if you don't have a convertible stuck in traffic before the car is warm you'll be unlikely to notice. The secondaries actually do work quite a bit to clean things up they just take longer to warm up and the cars don't run too bad to begin with. But that's just my opinion.

You hear the wastegates rattle in HD with downpipes, that's the biggest difference to me.

+1, back before catalytic converters, when cars ran leaded gas and poorly adjusted carburetors, radiation was considered medicinal, asbestos brakes were used, and smoking was considered a proper way to regulate your weight while pregnant, ALL children came out brain damaged with horrible defects. The human race would have gone extinct had it not been for California taking the forefront on emissions and ensuring a bright future for all Americans.

If you don't notice any difference after going catless then you must be a long time heavy smoker in your late 60's...

All completely catless (and open dump wastegate) cars have a smell (because racecar). You get use to it in a few days and at least my family has never complained about it so it can't be that bad. With the secondary cats if you have them I wouldn't expect much issue at all. No eyes burn. No babies turn purple. Do it! Or don't and ever wonder about the extra hp

I'm DP's, stock exhaust otherwise and run E60, other then the first cold start of the day it's clean burning.

I think it's an attribute. The guys know I know with V8's putting out same power smell like an old school muscle car out the tail pipes.

I had an e93 and never noticed any smell.
As others say the secondary's work very well
But it's really a toss up some cars smell and others don't

Either buy DPs w/ high flow cats in 'em or get some high flow cats to weld in downstream in addition to the OEM rear cats...or just find a different way to make more power.

I have never smelled or seen anything out of the ordinary with catless dps while in the car. The only time I notice is if I start the car in the garage and then get out of the car for whatever reason.

-If it's your daily driver I would stay away from ***less DP... I've had numerous cars with them and everyone of them smelled like unburnt fuel. I have them on my GNX but that is just my weekend ride. I would just eliminate the secondaries and maybe stick an x-pipe in place of the resonator. Thats what I did on xi and I like the little the exhuast tone and I have no "smell"... I can also still pass local emmsions tests..

Is the smell (unburnt fuel) just on cars that have catless DP's with a more aggressive tune, or also on non tuned cars with catless DP's. It seems like either way our tune companies ( JB, Cobb, etc) or us could lean the AFR out below 1400 RPM's.

If you're running the stock catback, you still retain the set of cats in the rear that will still pass the sniffer test in most states even with the removal of the cats in the downpipes. The smell is really only apparent when you run a fully catless system in both the downpipes and catback. You also have to keep in mind that every mid-90's V8 car & truck on the road now puts out more pollution than these cars do without the front cats.

If you're starting the car in an enclosed garage with the windows down, you will smell something. If you're driving in grid lock traffic with your windows down, you may smell something. Any other time unless you're at a stop for an extended period of time with the windows down, you'll never notice.

Personally I don't really smell anything different when running the stock catback but I can see how someone with a more sensitive nose could. We've sold hundreds of downpipes and I've yet to have one customer try to return one due to the smell.

I only notice it whenever I get out the car, windows rolled down I don't smell it unless I'm reversing or the wind hits it at a certain angle.

I used to run a cat-less X-pipe on my (sold) 600hp mustang before i had my bmw and never once smelled the exhaust in the car. On top of that I had a roush edition which has side exit exhaust that was directly below my windows

So don't worry you won't smell anything, unless you stand behind your car when its idling... You also have 2 rear cats, on my mustang i had only mufflers.

Fully catless here(primary & secondary) & it smells horrible driving in rush hr traffic in NYC. The two step is worth it though

I haven't noticed a smell in 40k miles of driving... most importantly, neither has the wife or kid.

As someone noted, the biggest difference is the HD wastegate rattle..
