Have you had a accessory belt fail lately?
The belts get wrapped around the main crank and sucked
into the engine where the pieces get sucked up into
the timing chain.

Check the ac compressor pulley. I had the same noise. I just put in a shorter belt to bypass it. Shop wants $500 labor to replace the compressor

Stop driving the car asap, if the belt breaks, so is your wallet

the bolts that secure the VANOS gears break off and start rattling around. BMW extended the warranty on this sort of failure to 10 years. this just happened to my N51 and had it repaired under warranty.

Yeah it took a bit of prodding with the service rep.

they have to pull off the valve cover to diagnose it (this was a bit of an issue with me because i do not use the dealer for service and do not trust these guys), so the valve cover gasket should be replaced. they have to retrieve the broken bolts, which probably means dropping the oil pan, so that's a new oil pan gasket as well.

Mines been rattling too on top of the lifter tick. If anyone can verify the solution (s) mentioned above, that would be great. My belt is only a year old though.

Be aware that 2010 & 2011 328i/xi (EXCEPT for E91??? :-) are subject to NHTSA Recall Campaign 14V-176 for broken VANOS Bolts, as described in attached RCRIT pdf.

An Endoscope, available from Amazon for $20, connected to Laptop or Phone via USB/A or USB/C port will allow you to inspect the VANOS bolts, at least on the INTAKE Cam Sprocket, WITHOUT removal of the Valve Cover.
