Good cans. If you're that serious into audio...you should look into getting an amplifier for your cans.

Take a look here: http://www.headphone.com/

They make decent products. And I have ordered their Airhead Amplifier. You probably want something better than that tho...perhaps something in their Desktop lineup.

Amazing how some headphones can sound better than a $10k audiophile rig...yet cost less then 1/10th the price and are portable. Awesome.

Btw...Boost...now that you tried Grado. Go to your local shop and ask if you can try out the Sennheiser HD650s...

Excellent taste. You should check out a pair of broken-in AKG 701s. Haven't listened to my Grados since.

Thank you, and wow, really?

Everyone has their preference. Grados have a good reputation of making good headphones that sound very detailed...especially with accoustical instruments.

AKG has made good cans as well. Beyerdynamics is also another good reputable firm. I still think a Sennheiser HD650 with balanced cables paired to a tube amp will kick anything else out of the water. But that may be just me...

Yeah. When you start getting into high-end headphones, YOU HAVE TO BUY A HEADPHONE AMPLIFIER! Your Grados are almost an exception to that rule in that Grados are so efficient that you can run them off of an iPod or through your computer's headphone jack. However, with that said, Grados will still sound better a headphone amplifier. You'll notice the difference mostly in the bass response, and you'll find them to be more detailed at lower volumes with the amp.

If you go the AKG 701 route, you need an amp. Also, the AKG 701s take around 65-70 hours of playing--called the breaking-in process--before the actual drivers (read: speakers) loosen enough to produce their best sound.

I think it's Stereophile magazine, or perhaps the Absolute Sound magazine, that proclaimed the AKG 701s the best headphone ever, well at least like under $5k or something like that. (Google it if you're interested.)

You can get the AKG 701s for $300-400. They produce my favorite sound and are the most comfortable headphones I've tried on.

I've heard good things about the HD650s. More interested in your tube amp comment.

What tube amp do you use? Or would you recommend? Also, if you could list the prices. My extreme high-fi days are behind me, I'm wouldn't spend more than a thousand on a headphone amp.

I've only used solid-state, for both speakers and headphones, and I've always been curious about tube amps.
