Oil capacity for the 335d
Hello, I have seem to forgotten the oil capacity of our 335d engines. Does anybody know how many liters are required?
Thank you.

I'm seeing inconsistency here as some are saying 7.5L/8 quarts and others are saying 8.0L/8.5 quarts.
1) Back when i first purchased vehicle, I spoke to tech at dealer and he showed me a table for oil capacity vs engine. He specifically showed me the M57 engine needing 7.5L. The M57 oil containers at this dealer (Castrol as this is 3 yrs ago) are liters [Advantage BMW, Midtown Houston] 2) I have done oil changes where I put in 7 liters and then warm up car to get a good reading. I then "sneak" up on the last 1/2 L to try to get it not over full. 3) After doing #2 a few times, on the last change i put in 7.5L from the get go and it came out a hair high on the dip stick after warming/shut down/wait 10 minutes. I've checked about 4 times and my garage floor is level too. I would be cautious of just dumping 8L in from the get go. Make up your own mind. I will go back to #2 method as it hasn't failed me. |

Mine definitely takes 8L to full, I just did it last week. Either way, an extra 1/2L is not going to cause any problems, and neither is 1/2L low though I would definitely err on the side of high rather than low. A lot of guys who are concerned about oil starvation during track events will run a full quart over full.

This proves my point that we have a subtle engine to engine variation of oil capacity.
To OP, don't take either answer as gospel. I would work my way up to full and not just dump 8L in. It's okay for Hooper but not me. |

My last oil change I did 8L and had to pull some out to be at level. Just got a long clear tube from HomeDepot and a 100ml syringe that worked like a charm through a dipstick.

You guys serious? The dip stick is not intended to be the exact measurement to live your life by, its just a reference. Unless you are checking it under the exact conditions that were used to set the measurement the first time you are not doing yourself any favors worrying about it being off a little. FYI the manual says to check it 10minutes after shutting down the engine. I have compared the reading between 10 minutes after shut down and about 3 hours later and the later reading showed significantly higher than the 10 minute reading.

Whenever I've put only 7.5L in, I always get the "oil level low" message about 2 months later.

Prior I bought the car BMW made an oil change. I had to suck out 1 liter. I think they emptied the can and filled in 8 liters. 7,5 liters may be the right amount of oil

Hooper, no one here telling you to not use 8 L. I just wouldn't advise anyone to ignore the stick's reading and dump in 8L regardless. Not being heated here but think the dipstick was designed to be used properly. Some folks like to keep their oil at 1/2 way point between max and min to avoid windage. Out |

No problem with going by the stick reading, my point was that sucking oil out if you are a 1/2 L over is ridiculous. An overfull sump can definitely cause windage but not at a 1/2L over. I would be more concerned running a 1/2L low than a 1/2L high, but I wouldn't consider myself concerned either way because exact level just isn't that important.

Lol either way its your preference. I just follow spec. Which is 7.5L or 8 QUARTS and nothing more. Haven't had any issues and haven't received an oil low light since getting the car. Keep 1 extra bottle for emergencies.

So we need to find the avg of what everyone is putting in (7.523L???).
I recall the TDI had issues with engine run-on with overfilling. That's why everyone was so cautious about over filling. How accurate is the idrive oil level check? I've seen it in the menu but never used it. |

Only thing I've ever seen in the idrive with regard to the engine oil is service date related. Nothing to do with oil level or percentage of oil left.
