Rotors @ 45K miles?
2015 435i (M Brakes) w/ approx 45K miles. I had the dealer do my state inspection when I was in for oil service. I was told I needed new brake pads and rotors. I'm skeptical about the rotors though. I asked my SA if the rotors were warped or something and he told me the tech didn't leave note -- tech didn't even mention rotors in the video, just showed the measurement of the pads.
The tech did mention brake squealing in the video. These brakes have done this since year 2 when the wheels are dirty. When the car was under warranty I was told many times by this same dealer this squealing was "normal" for M Brakes. I don't brake hard or ride my brakes for long periods but 70% of my driving is stop and start on local roads. So should I bother to get a 2nd opinion on the rotors or is the dealer just trying to make some quick $. |

You should not be going to a dealer for brake service. Go to an indy. Even better, find a high school or technical school that has automotive repair courses. Many of them will donate labor, you just have to supply the parts. Brakes are about the easiest job on a car, so they're not going to mess it up.
Rotors should last through at least two sets of pads. Brakes squeal when they're not properly lubricated. They should be lubed at least every 20k miles. |
