Porsche to replace engines in every recalled 911 GT3

Quote:
Porsche has reportedly confirmed that it plans to replace the engine in every 911 GT3 that was built for the 2014 model year.

In a letter allegedly sent to a 911 GT3 owner, the company noted that its investigation has settled on a defective connecting-rod fastener, which is prone to loosening and consequently damaged the crankcase in two cars that caught fire in Europe.

"In order to avoid this in the future, an optimized screw connection is currently being tested," the company wrote in the letter, which was posted by Autoweek. "For the final validation of this solution, Porsche AG is currently carrying out extensive tests."

Rather than continuing to use the "Mezger" engine of the 2013 model, Porsche adopted the 911 Carrera S powerplant for the latest GT3. Retuning and component upgrades squeeze 475 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque out of the mill.

"At Porsche we are rigorous when implementing an engineering solution, therefore, after the successful testing and validation we will be installing new engines with optimized piston rod screw connections in all 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 vehicles," the letter continues.

The company has promised to provide an update within three weeks, however a schedule for carrying out the engine replacement has yet to be announced.

Ouch.

At least they're taking care of the customers.

Thanks for posting.

They did the same thing for early Boxsters, but didn't tell owners. They just replaced motors at oil change services. Cheaper and better for their image than a recall.

I have a coworker with a GT3 held up at port, he'll be excited to finally get his car.

Shite...That'll cut into the $23,000 profit on each vehicle.

But props to owning up and doing the right RIGHT thing.

So you're saying Porsche owners had no idea that their cars had new engines after getting an oil change? I find that hard to believe. Wouldn't an engine swap take much more time to complete than the a typical oil change?

Not when you drop the motor for an oil change anyway, it's just a matter of moving the accessories over. Just going off what I've heard from a Porsche mechanic who said this was common with early Boxsters, they apparently had an entire section of their warehouse filled with motors, waiting to replace customers motors.

why did they replace the engines? and why on earth would they need to drop an engine for an oil change? doesn't the sump have a drain plug?
