Mercedes CLA 45 AMG

Saw this a week ago and have been researching on it since. Debating on making the switch at this point but it just doesn't have a manual option...

decisions decisions...

happy Tuesday everyone!

Definitely faster in a straight line and on a track. However, I definitely wouldn't buy one, the transverse engine kills the deal. AKA most of the power goes to the front wheels not the back like xDrive does. I would find a 335is with a 6MT if you want a manual.

why does engine orientation kill the deal? Curious.

That thing is pretty much maxed out though as far as what it can do. It's an extremely high strung 4 cylinder and the turbo is at 26psi (i think). A 335i with a jb4 and dp will take it in a straight line. Someone here at my work has one and I've ridden in it. He's been in my car too and he even says that mine is faster.

I saw a CLA at the Houston auto show, it seemed very tall off the ground.

The CLA 45 AMG seems pretty nice to me (except for the AT), with all that HP and AWD and a sport tuned suspension. Lots of good reviews on the web, including nice video reviews). Fans of Chris Harris can see him compare the A45 AMG, the wagon form, to the M135i. In the real world, the sloping roof line severely impacts rear headroom for people of average height. I sat in back and was very uncomfortable. At 5'10", that's not going to be a fun place for lots of folks. Also, the roof line completely blocks your view out the rear window. It's fashion over function but it looks great!

I'm definitely intrigued by it. Jalopnik has one as a loaner car this week so maybe check out their review.

The only things that kinda put me off are the lack of a true MT and the possibility of understeer.

I started this thread and of course all the haters jumped on.

I believe the amg can only send 50% power to the rear when it needs it. Which makes it primarily a FWD car which steers me far away from it.

The CLA45 AMG is faster than an E9X M3 or a tuned 335i. It has decent handling according to reviewers and is lighter than the e9X making it somewhat "tossable". Styling is personal, but I like it. It's worth a drive, but they are in high demand, so it might be hard to arrange a test drive. I need the back seat, so it's off my list of future cars, but they will bring the GLA45 AMG over next year, so that's one for a future test drive.

Save your money and get an M235i. Decimate all CLA45's that come near you.

It's definitely not faster than a tuned 335i. Although it is faster than your 330i.

Your 335 xi wouldnt even be close. Especially on a track or slalom.....or straight line. I think its a little goofy looking but its great value. More hp/litre than anything on the market i believe...which may not be a good thing. Sounds like a pretty amazing little car.

Its nice but I was inside and to be honest it feels kind of bland and empty. I like the front end, and I like the overall style but the rear of the car is UGLY. the rear looks smooshed in or like a crushed in cls550.

Why? Because it was derived front a front wheel drive car and that means it'll send more power to the front wheels which means less fun and more understeer. I'm pretty sure I read it'll never send more than 50% of the power to the rear wheels in motor trend, but I could be wrong. Also motor trend talked about lots of understeer too.

It may understeer but not because engine is sideways....I see where you came from now. I'm surprised they used an awd system like that with all the competition out there. Understeer is safer and its got lots of hp but....

I agree. Wheels look too small or something. Look awful as regular sedan. Mags all said it looks cheap inside too. High tech engine though, which is nice.

Lot's of HP sent primarily to the front wheels is a bad thing. They have to combat torque steer and while understeer is safer, the more HP you throw at those poor front tires, the less cornering ability you will have.

Ouch. I never claimed it was faster than a 330i. I already knew that. It is fast though:

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...mg_first_test/

and appears to be faster than your whip as well (though I already knew that too):

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...mg_first_test/

Why start with the animosity? No brand whore here, just pointing out interesting facts about a new car to a forum of enthusiasts. Sheesh.
