2016 Nissan GT-R to have 800hp hybrid system

Quote:
Specifics about the next-generation Nissan GT-R are circulating in Japan, predicting a familiar formula with all the dials turned up to eleven, plus hybrid power.

Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer has already told us to expect a hybrid-electric powertrain for the next Godzilla, stating last November that "electric systems can fill in the gaps in the torque curve and offer genuine performance gains, as well as lowering emissions. It's win-win, and I'd expect to see some form of hybridization on the next generation of car."

Now, a Japanese magazine article translated by 7Tune, claims that the system will consist of the existing twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 found in the current GT-R combined with an Formula 1-style KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) being co-developed with Williams F1. The motor is already capable of 595 hp in GT-R NISMO guise, and KERS could potentially add another 250 hp, crossing the 800 hp threshold.

Nissan's performance goals for the R36, as the next iteration will be called internally and amongst salivating fans, are a 0-62 mph time of 2.7 seconds and a 0-400m (quarter-mile) time of around 10 seconds, heading towards a top speed of 340 kph (211 mph).

Pricing is still undetermined, but expected to fall somewhere in the admittedly broad range of $120,000 to $200,000. The next Godzilla should invade showrooms sometime in 2016.

Checkmate. Sounds great. As it stands most of the reasons people don't go for this car now are subjective personal preferences and not due to performance characteristics.

Can't wait for the day that cars are guided via satellite with no driver intervention on any track in the world. With weather conditions updated instantaneously and accounted for to provide maximum performance. Drivers can compare who's car is faster from the comfort of the paddock.

What a stupid thing to say. Try driving a GT-R on a road course with the ESP turned off and tell me it isn't a 'Driver's car'. The individuals who constantly belittle the actual driving dynamics of GT-Rs are most probably the ones left far behind every lap.

Totally awesome. NA ICE with KERS is what BMW should have been doing with its M cars. Had they stayed in F1 they would have had that system perfected by now.

Can't wait for the usual idiots to tell us it's "just a Nissan" and that the M3 is a "better" car

It's going to lose a ton of customers if the highest level trim is more than $130k.

If they go this route, this car will cost as much as a 991 Turbo….too much.

Even though the GT-R is not a inexpensive car, its much less then a 991 Turbo, and I feel that its still a big selling factor for the car, despite its enormous capabilities.

How reliable can they make it??

This R36 GTR if the rumors are true may very well be just as fast and capable as the hypercars like the P1 or 918. The 991 Turbo isn't even faster than the current GTR.

Besides, by the time the R36 comes out, Porsche would have probably jacked up the price of the Turbo to Ferrari/Lambo levels
