A good case in point, where the non M F10 got horrible reviews for steering feel, they switched to HPS (and non RFT's) for the M5, and it still got horrible reviews. We can't blame everything on EPS, some of it, like I mentioned with the E82, is that BMW just seems to have moved away from providing first rate steering feel, regardless of what kind of assist it has.

The F10 range, M5 included, are pigs. Not just viewed in isolation, but also when you look at it compared to the class competitors too. I bet that bulk is hard to engineer around when you have to boost the hell out of the steering.

I test drove an 86 today.
Everything was good except the steering. It made the car feel cheap and at times the best way to describe the steering wheel was a dead feeling, like nothing at all was happening, like an arcade game. I was hoping Toyota would of made some progress in the past 3 years but evidently they haven't.

I test drove a Clio RS200 today.
It did not feel anywhere near as sporty as the 86 but the electric steering was great, if I hadnt known I would of guessed it was an over boosted hydraulic system.

Don't forget the 86 is on Prius tires. They do feel better on good tires, but it's still not a strong point of the car.
