That made me laugh really hard. It amazes me daily how many people even got their drivers licenses with how they drive. That should be part of drivers ed.

I firmly believe that there would be fewer accidents (and thus fewer injuries and fatalities) if the police busied themselves enforcing traffic rules like this one, or the rule to signal before turning or lane changes, and wasted less of their time (and our money) chasing down someone going 75 in a 55.

Yes - but that is a lot more work, and is a lot harder than parking in a safe obscure spot with a portable radar detector. They should simply use camera vans for speeding and use patrol cars and real police to weed out the idiots on the road. After three idiot tickets, you should lose your license for a year or so. IMHO.

Sadly in this country everyone thinks that driving is a right, not a privalege so every imbecile can get a license. It's actually surprising when you encounter a highway where people know how to drive.

i echo the thought that rudimentary lane discipline needs to be part of drivers ed. but then again some DMV's don't even use the highway to administer driving tests....sigh

In Kentucky people don't even have to take drivers ED. They just take the test till they pass (many times usually). It's just sad.

Slow drivers on the wrong lanes are probably the cause of accidents and traffic jams. I spend 3 years in Germany and never saw an accident. And I drove 140 mph almost every day on the autobahn. Had a 1993 325is back in those days.

Thanks for posting this link. Much appreciated. Occasional reminders never hurt.

You are right on. It is much harder to get your diving licenses in Europe than the USA and people here think it is there right to drive, even if they have several DUI’s.

I lived in Europe for six years and it was an extreme pleasure to drive there. People would only use the left lane for passing then get back in the right lane. If you wanted to go faster than the car in front of you that driver was always willing to let you by.

Lived there for almost 13years and going to the states and driving there recently almost drove me nuts. I would wonder to myself...why is this guy in the left lane going the EXACT same speed of the guy in the right lane??? My mother does this and I always say MOOOOM....GET OVER...LOL...then she looks at me and says but that person is going too slow in the right lane....:iono:.....I miss the autobahn. BTW in Germany you have to take almost 6 months worth of drivers training and pass a 100question written test and a drivers test to get your license...on top of that it costs at least 1000euros for the training and testing (for the nationals not for the military).

I was stationed in Germany for 2 years and when I drive in the states it's like going back to kindergarten. The slower speeds, the terrible drivers and so much attitude from other drivers. The Germans know what driving is all about.

No problem. Its a shame.. most would think this information is common sense, but take a 5 minute drive on the road and you will see different.

I got to get down there once in my life. How does driving that fast on a regular basis impact the life of the car?

^^^It is actually interesting....you would think all that fast driving would have prolonged wear and tear on the engine. But I used to regularly see older model BMW's on the road out there. Many had 200k and more on the odometer....

They also have a lot more incentive to keep cars running because they are so much more expensive than in the US where cars (and many other things) are thought of as disposable. If I were faced with having to spend $50-60k for a 135i, I would have kept putting the money into my 318i and easily gotten to 200,000 miles (I'm at 176,000 now).

+1 to this whole thread!!!!! Driving in Germany is such a treat! I actually had culture shock coming back from Germany after 6 years. Mostly due to the difference in driving on the roads here, especially urban areas!
