Verizon customer - READ - opt out or get spamed!

No bullshit. Just opted out my phones. Unfking believeable!

If you are a Verizon Wireless customer, you may know that Verizon does some shady things to make their revenue streams fatter. This morning I got a letter from Verizon Wireless telling me that they will start putting ads on my phone. Lucky for me they are required to have some manner of opt-out functionality in place. When I looked inside the pamphlet, I saw the number for the opt-out. It is 1.800.333.9956. I called that number and got a very nice automated option to opt out.

I encourage all of my fellow Verizon Wireless customers to send a VERY strong message to the folks at One Verizon Way and opt out. Opt out even if you’re not a Verizon Wireless customer. Send letters to the address “One Verizon Way, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920-1097″ and tell them how disgusted you are with this new practice.

It is not okay for Verizon Wireless to put these ads on our personal property, and if we stand silent while they do it we will be in a world of hurt. But act fast, because according to these terms, Verizon Wireless will only give you 30 days to opt out.

UPDATE:

So, I’ve got some more info for you. Verizon Wireless, in their agreement, says that because they have changed the agreement, you have the right to cancel your service with them without paying early termination fees for cancelling – but you only have 30 days from when you are notified.

Verizon Wireless Statement On Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI)

October 15, 2007: 06:25 PM EST

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless issued the following statement today regarding the use of Customer Proprietary Network Information (CPNI):

"Verizon Wireless is taking another step to deliver the best service to its customers while providing the maximum protection for customer privacy. Verizon Wireless is currently sending its customers a notice that customer information will be shared within the Verizon family of companies to facilitate the offering of better service packages to consumers. Customers are given the option to forego the sharing of information among the Verizon companies.

"Specifically, the notice sent to customers is an advance notice that Verizon Wireless may share basic, non-identifying customer information with our parent companies. This notice, following rules set forth by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), gives customers who do not want that information shared with our telecommunications affiliates the option of telling us by 'opting out.' The FCC has rules which state specifically that opt-out is the way to share information and provide certain required language, which we followed.

"Verizon Wireless has a long-standing policy of guarding personal customer information. We have put this process in place so that we can ensure our customers' privacy needs and expectations are met -- even within the Verizon family of companies. We will continue to vigorously defend the privacy rights of our customers."

For more information, visit Verizon's Technology and Telecommunications Policy Blog at http://policyblog.verizon.com.

I like Alltel. They don't pull gay shit like the rest of the companies. They may never have the newest of new new phones but I can deal with a little wait for non-gayness.

Were you be able to cancel the service without pain with customer service? or anyone has successfully cancel using this reason?
They gave an option to opt-out, so that doesn't really changed the agreement, isn't it? I wanna to cancel mine so badly, so really like to see this worked. If you call 800 number to opt-out, then you call customer service to cancel your account?

Also, I am receiving electronic bill, so I don't see the notice in actual paper format, and I couldn't find any notice in my online account. Were they send out in Oct billing? Any info would help. Thanks.

I kept mine. Wife needs Verizon for work. I would think you could go to any Verizon store and shove the phone where the sun won't shine. Well, asking politely may work better.
