Based on a whole lot of years experience with almost every one mentioned on here, and all of the posts by the OP, I would recommend the USP 9mm. They are utterly reliable and are easy to manage for those new to shooting and more prone to flinching from anticipation of recall. If the price of the USP is out of range, there are two other choices that are still very good, the Springfield XD9 and believe it or not the Taurus 24/7 in 9mm.

When the time comes to move up in power, don't overlook the .357SIG. It has super ballistics and the recoil is not a big deal (better have the ear protection on good though). I have a Sig P229 with both the .40 and .357SIG barrels. I've come to like the .357SIG better. My personal protection is a Para Ordinance P12-45, but it's not for everybody. For those who mentioned Glocks, great choice too for reliability at a decent price.

Home shotgun - Remington 870 Marine Magnum. A perp in your home may have some trepidation upon hearing the distinctive sound of a shell being chambered. Forget pistol grips unless you try it first. Then, after your wrist sprain heals, you'll probably think again.

The main thing in all this is to remember: get training, don't aim it at anything you don't intend to kill, many people have been shot by "unloaded guns", practice a lot and regularly, and be safe.

my last one was a HK VP70Z but it was only for rec shooting as we cannot carry under any circumstances in Canada.

it's probably a little big for carrying but it's tops for rec shooting.

Goofy looking gun, but they are fun to shoot and reliable. Looks like a ray-gun. I don't think that they're made any more.

Yea Im narrowed my self down a bit to the following:

Sig 229R
H&K USP Compact (9mm)
XD9
G19 (last choice)

Im going to the range tomorrow and plan on shooting a box of rounds on both the 229R and the Glock .. if I dont mind the weight on the 229R thats probly the direction Im going ... howver if the weight gets annoying or I shoot better with the Glock Im going to look in the the Poly setups with the XD9 placing high on my list (mainly due to price and the fact that I could buy my shotgun and it for the same price as the H&K).

With the short barrel and the pistol grip, it felt AMAZINGLY comfortable "off the hip" when out shooting skeet. Cleanly hit every pigeon in that setup the last time out, even with a few trick double pulls, etc.

The SIG P229 is a great gun. My experience with these is that you need to run a few hundred rounds through them when new to assure feed reliability. You should do this with anyway with any new gun and the practice is important. Many people make the mistake of buying a gun and then never break it in, assuming it will shoot just like the range demo they tried. One other point if you really like the P229 is to consider the .357SIG version of it rather than the 9mm. It is virtually feed-jam proof because of the bottleneck design of the cartridge. So I ended up going to the range and shooting 3 different guns .... Glock G19, Sig 229, and XD45 ... I liked the Sig the best out of all of them. The poly guns had a lot of vibration in them which actually surprised me as I would expect the fully alloy gun to vibrate the most. Also I was more accurate with the Sig and got back on target faster with it. So in the end I ended up ordering a 229R bi-tone with night sights ... they didnt have it in stock so it will be in in a week or two.

That's a long wait. I've never had to wait longer than 3 days for something that they had to order at the place I go. Anyway, you made a good choice. The Sigarms Academy in New Hampshire is pretty well done. Long way from LV though.

Does anybody know of any associations that offer free gun safety courses or do most of them cost money...for some reason i thought they were free...I dont mind paying just wondering. I want to take a course before i buy one

Ive taken a few through the NRA that are given at my local range. They only cost like $25 and you get certificates for whatever course you took. For me, I dont think that really costs much when youre talking a life saving device that you can only harm others with if misinformed.

No not at all! I dont mind paying i have just begun researching this and have talked to a few ranges with beginner courses starting at about 180 (including gun rental and ammo) to about $400. I just wanted to make sure i wasnt paying for something that is offered for free as say a community service. I defnality agree with you any amount of money is worth it to learn the proper handling of something so powerful.
