Raikkonene to replace Webber?

"If you were watching the British Grand Prix this past weekend, you may have noticed a little friction in the Red Bull Racing team. And we're not talking about Sebastian Vettel and his team's jammed wheel gun that cost him the race.

In the closing laps of the race, Mark Webber had closed in right on Vettel's tail in a close fight for second place. But then the team radioed Webber and instructed him to back off. Webber ignored the team orders and kept pressing, and while he didn't manage to get by and didn't cause either to crash, it undoubtedly caused some consternation on Red Bull's pit wall.

Now rumor has it that the team is so angry with their No. 2 driver that they're preparing to give him the boot. In his place, according to reports, the reigning champions are planning on bringing in Kimi Raikkonen.

Of course this isn't the first time Raikkonen has been linked to an F1 return with Red Bull Racing. The 2007 champion left F1 a couple of years ago after Ferrari shoved him out the nest (with a big golden parachute, mind you), competing since in the World Rally Championship and in NASCAR, but has never ruled out a grand prix comeback.

Kimi's long been sponsored by Red Bull (the energy drink company that owns the F1 team in question), and apparently has close personal ties to Vettel. But few people know for sure whether the team orders incident at Silverstone was enough to break the proverbial camel's back in the often strained relations between Webber and RBR's management.

--------------

I am torn apart in this rumor. I love Webber because he doesn't get the King Treatment that Vettel gets from RBR. He keeps his stuff together, without the support of everyone, and I like that. On the other hand, he can't deliver as much as Vettel and other drivers out there. Hamilton with RBR? Championship or 2nd place guaranteed.

On the other hand, Raikkonen is fricking good. Like very good. I would rather see Montoya coming back, but I like Raikkonen and he could be a good thing to the sport.

To be continued...

UPDATE::

Raikkonen rumor to Red Bull just downplayed!

Red Bull team figures were out in force on Wednesday, playing down links with Kimi Raikkonen and suggesting Mark Webber will be staying in 2012.

It has been reported that the energy-drink owned team had targeted world rally and NASCAR driver Raikkonen, F1's 2007 World Champion and a former race winner for McLaren and Ferrari, for next year after Australian Webber openly ignored team orders during the British Grand Prix on Sunday.

But team owner Dietrich Mateschitz is quoted by the German news agency SID: "There is still no doubt about Mark's contract extension.

"He feels comfortable with us and within the team is very popular," he told the Austrian newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten.

"He cannot get a better car, and we cannot get a better driver from the market," added Mateschitz.

Team boss Christian Horner was reportedly furious with Webber's insubordination at Silverstone, but Mateschitz seems less bothered.

"I understand that he wanted to come further forward; he would be a bad racer if he did not try," said the billionaire.

As for the Raikkonen rumors, Mateschitz's F1 right-hand man Helmut Marko told TZ: "Kimi Raikkonen is not and will not be an issue for us. He definitely will not drive at Red Bull.

"These rumors are far-fetched and total nonsense," added the Austrian.

Marko added that when Red Bull is ready to replace Webber, it will be with a driver from the company's own talent pool.

RBR is too focused on Vettel. No need for them to pay for an ex world champion actually...

All RBR need is a good enough driver to support SV and grab enough points for WCC.

I doubt Massa would go from one #2 position to another. He will either seek a #1 spot, or stick with Ferrari.

#1 spot for who? He is better off staying with Ferrari. $$$, more chances of winning and more perks.

And imo, he is not that good of a driver compared to the rest of the bunch. He needs more balls. His accident truly changed him, and I understand.

Oh I wish.. Kimi would be amazing in the Red Bull...
maybe even give Seb a run for his money. I love Kimi and Seb, my 2 favorite drivers in the 11 years I've watched the sport.

Raikkonen was my favorite driver in F1 before Vettel came into the game but there's no way he's coming back. Kimi doesn't want any commitments, he wants to have the option of racing when and where he chooses to. He did say he accomplished everything he wanted in F1 and that was to win a championship.

The team does not treat webber fairly. Id understand if they want to favor the driver that is ahead in points but when webber was ahead last year the team took a different stance. No team orders. But when vettel is ahead team orders are back in play. Shame on red bull.

By the way I'm a huge vettel fan. This has nothing to do with vettel personally and everything to do with red bull favoring a driver regardless of the standings.

the reality of it is, Webber is quick driver, and that is about it. He is not a champion. He waited for years and suddenly his team (old jaguar) became the best, yet, this kid came and beat him. Oh well, Webby, but you are not going to win a World championship. The team knows that better than anyone else.
