S55 e90 335i oil pan part 2

Hello everyone, I have some updates. I decide to cut 2 cm from oil pan. It was quite lot of work. Oil pan is good material according to professional welder who dit this for me. It is not easy weld job and you need experience for it.

Lowering oil pan have multiple impact:
1) oil capacity can be affected
2) oil level sensor will not show proper level
3) pickup tube is too long

Outer view of oil pan:

Marked is main cut 2 cm all around and second marked section was necesary for clearance on power steering lines.

Inner view of oil pan:

ad 1) Capacity
Modified S55 oil pan with 6l of water:

Original N55 oil pan with 6l of water:

There is no significant difference.

ad 2) oil level sensor
I don't have pictures of this, but sensor position is different in S55 than N55. After filling empty engine with 6,5l of oil oil level show full. So I keep it on full.

ad 3) pickup tube

In first round I cut 2 cm from pickup tube. Be careful and measure multiple times. You can always cut more, but cannot add.

I used multiple way how to measure it. Final one was mouting pickup tube to engine and add 4 stick of wood loosely around end of it with paper tape. It needs to be loose so you can slide them in, but tight enough to stay in that position. This way I was able to measure final clearance with old pan gasket installed.

I recommend to do measure clearance before cut and use it as goal after. I did not do this, so I had to calculate it from content of the rectangle of pickup tube. This should be most restrictive place.

Power steering pump:
I made 3 point mounting point multi peace bracket.

Arrows mark 3 fix points.

Some details of brackets:

Bracket mounted to oil pan is splited to allow power steering brackets dismount without removing bolts from oil pan. I used longer aluminium bolts for this.

Due to my belt schema where power steering pum is pulled to clima compresor by belt it was not stiff enough so I had to add one more

Last modification is nut and bolt for steering rack.
Friend made for me nut with 4 milimiter part which was drilled in aluminium bracket. This way it can be easily disassembled with engine over it.

It was much more work than I expected. I would consider different options.

I'm pretty sure the S55 oil pan won't fit in xDrive E92. Even the normal oil pan from E92 RWD doesn't fit to xDrive. You would have to swap front subframe and basically whole front suspension.

Why the s55 oil pan is better?
Here's the explanation: https://blog.fcpeuro.com/bmws-s55-oi...rmance-upgrade

Main reason is secondary oil pump to move oil from front of pan to back. This needs space which is not in N55. Also there is difference in pickup tube, and some more plastic to prevent movement of oil back to front.

Wow backovskyjosef super thank you for update!
That's really a lot of work.
I wonder if I'd have to do the same mods to oil pan to fit it to my E92 N55.
If yes - then I think I won't do this s55 upgrade, it's too much work for me and I'd probably buy VAC baffle which helps but does not eliminate the problem.

EDIT:
Somehow this guy here did the s55 oil pan upgrade to his E82 N55 and he didn't have to cut the oil pan

Wow, this is very involved. Thank you for braving this endeavor. I'm on the F-series platform with electric power steering so I didn't have to go through all of this. But yeah, fine work you're doing.

Just got a response from FCP Euro regarding their "BMW S55 Oil Pan and Oil Pump Upgrade Kit". Thought I'll share it here:

Question:
"Hello, So I have found the information that your kit "BMW S55 Oil Pan and Oil Pump Upgrade Kit - 11137854463KT" will fit my E92 335i N55 manufactured in 09/2012 as I have found information in the web that "It fits the 135i and 335i which had hydraulic power steering. For cars manufactured after 02/2012".
Could you please confirm this information?
I assume that the problem is with bolting the hydraulic power steering pump and did the BMW change the way it's bolted after 02/2012?"

Answer from Justin from FCP Euro:
"I have reached out and confirmed that this oil pan upgrade kit will still work with E9x chassis with hydraulic power steering/power steering pumps - there is no modification required."

Interesting. So what’s the difference between the 2012n55s and the 2011s?

I am confused at FCPs fitment list as well, E82 here and the PS pump def bolts to the oil pan so I'm not sure how they can say "no modification necessary". Now if someone were to manufacture these PS brackets, then we'd be in business.

To follow up on this, FCP responded to my question on fitment with

"Fitments are only listed for F chassis cars which do not have hydraulic power steering. It should not be an issue."

Seems to be directly contradicting the previous reply that it will work on E chassis cars.
