LOL, yes it does!
Edit: A lot of butt hurt E9x owners in here. N54 was a solid motor, but BMW dropped it in favor of a single twin scroll turbo which had even less lag, VALVETRONIC (improved throttle response at low RPM's, improved mileage and emissions), and a flatter torque curve (max torque came on earlier too, and power didn't drop off as soon). So those who are claiming that the N54 had "more power" are obviously clueless. Nor is it more "robust". Last edited by fecurtis; 06-25-2014 at 12:35 PM.. |

Yeah sure BMW just went backwards and choose the N54 for their 1M for nothing. |

The N54 was praised for it's performance potential but widely criticized for it's reliability issues in many circles. That is probably a big reason for their move to the N55, which from what I've gathered has proven to be a more reliable powerplant overall. Hopefully with the new inline six rumored to be in the LCI F30 cars, they will get the best of both worlds.

I thought that was a common sense, business 101 thing but I guess that was lost on you. The N55 already makes 320 HP (same as the N54 in the 1M and 335is) in the M235i. And those who get the M Performance Power Kit installed on their F30's (or any other car with the N55 aside from the M235i) get 320 HP to 335 HP depending on when the car was actually built. So yup, 100% clueless. I'll have to see if I can be as butt hurt and bitter as you when BMW replaces the N55 soon with the B58. |

And it wasn't as efficient, but I never cared about that.
I never had wastegate or HPFP issues with my N54 either - and it had the JB3...that car was really fast

My 1M has the N54, same as the Z4is, fabulous engine. Not surprised the N55 is still in the top of the engines, however I am quite surprised the S55 in the M3/4 didn't do much better??
Neither my 07 335i or 1M both of which have the N54 have never had an HPFP or Wastegate issue..

The N54 won its category for 6 straight years....
In 2013, Porsche's 2.7 finally knocked the N54 down to 2nd. That year was also the only one in which the N54 and N55 competed -- and the N55 came in 5th. Although I admit I'm a bit puzzled as to how it has now jumped to the top of the list this year, even over Porsche's 2.7. The N55 might be a great engine, but as others said, you don't know what you're missing just with the N54, never mind the 335is over the 335i. BMW made a conscious decision to spec the 335is, Z4 35is, and 1M all with the N54.

Yep - still used in both the Z4 35i and 35is. Once those cars retire next year, so will the engine. The good news is you can still get a TT I6 gasoline engine from BMW since the S55 now carries that torch. And it's expected to come in more models later - including an SUV and perhaps even a roadster.
