Loaded 550 or a diesel Jetta??

My neighbor, who is single, just bought a loaded 2007 550i. It cost him over $70,000 and as of today it was about 300 miles on the odo. He is getting a new job which requires a daily commute towards downtown. He is now convinced he should sell it, not because he can't afford it, but because he wants a more fuel efficient daily driver. He has his heart set on a 2006 VW Jetta diesel. Loaded he said it would come to about $28,000. It gets in the forties in terms of miles per gallon. His second car is an SUV he usually uses occasionally and he doesn't want three cars (can't blame him there).

Any thoughts??

Well...three thoughts:

1. Glad he has an environmental conscience, although it seems to be $70K too late

2. If he can afford a $70K car, $3.50/gallon fuel shouldn't be a problem

3. For the amount of money he'll loose on trading away with BMW, he could pay for years of $5/gallon fuel.

All that being said, I've driven the Jetta, fully loaded, both 2.0T and Diesel. Very nice car fo the money. Almost purchased a 2.0T before I settled an E90 (only paid $2.5K more than fully loaded Jetta)

As tkochh said above, your friend just jumped into a $70K, and now he is worried about the price of gas? Is he a consultant or something - didn't know he was gonna have to commute into the city from NoVA?

In any event, why not just use the SUV as a daily driver then? If he's worried about mileage -- sell the SUV, and use those funds to purchase a beater. When all is said and done, if he turns around and sells the BMW, he's gonna take a bath. A final option -- park and ride or commuter bus
