Corvette ZR1 rips through the ring at 7:26.4 minutes!

Quote:
I know many people have been very interested in how fast the ZR1 would be at the Ring…

Most car enthusiasts are quite familiar with the Nürburgring. Built in the 1920’s near Cologne, Germany, “the Ring” is considered to be the toughest and most challenging race track in the world.

Over the last two weeks, we have been doing our final tuning and testing there before we start ZR1 production cars. This morning (Friday June 27), General Motors development engineer Jim Mero drove the Corvette ZR1 around the Nürburgring in a time of 7:26.4.
He goes to note that there was a strong headwind on the big straight and everything was stock except for communication and safety equipment.

V-Spec has been clocked faster!

These ring times are embaressing the Europeans in their own homes.

Only by 1.4 seconds and isn't official it might be even faster. The GT-R's AWD is really something.

the time is incredible since it's a car w/ a base price of 100K and given that it was done by an engineer and not a highly-skilled test driver, expect that time to drop when a top-level driver takes a crack at it. Also, it wasn't a "ringer" car with things added to it like special cup tires or race gas or suspension tweaks just to get a good ring time. It was a stock car on stock tires, and stock tune running on pump gas. You drive this car off the street onto the track, get at 7:2X ring time, pass the finish line and drive it home.

I read in a Corvette magazine that during an interview they got one of the designers to finally admit what car they were targeting with the ZR1 in terms of performance benchmarks, it's the Carrera GT.

To Carnage: I doubt that either of us would just waltz into a ZR-1 and clock a 7:2x time on the 'ring.

Sweet time, I can't wait to see the V-Spec take it down. I wonder what GM's response will be to that.

This is how the V-spec lap time reads:

"7:25 Nissan GT-R V-Spec ~551 PS/~1590 kg 2008-04-08 Car Magazine autoblog.com Unofficial time measured by bystanders at the track "

I am not sure how reliable that is.

Not to mention the ZR-1 was a production car, not a test mule.

That's as bad as the V-Spec time that was an "Unofficial time measured by bystanders at the track" but people are quoting that time as the gospel truth. That's like me saying I ran a 9 sec. 1/4 mile last night and I'm going to quote it as real because I counted 1-Mississippi, 2-Mississippi, 3-Mississippi..all the way down the 1/4 to get the time.
