You can read all sorts of debates on this board about many differnet things, but the one thing that EVERYONE agrees on is that you do not even think about running these tires in the winter in NY!

We all just have to suck it up and get 17s with winter tires, or run 17s year-round, or move to Cali.
Agreed ....... I was surprised at how good 17's with Dunlop M3's were ..... handled pretty well ...... actually felt a little lighter to the touch, sportier in a sense ........ but squeeled a bit on high speed turns.

Agreed! The stock RE050A's are subpar in Rain, let alone snow...

lol, I am comparing the stock re050a's to my previous set of good year gs d3 "summer" tires! They were AWESOME!! Almost like very little difference between wet and dry!! That's why I'm getting them again.

Which wheels don't you like??? ... the 162's or the 17inchers that come standard with the XI sport package???

I think the 162's look amazing.

I love the 162s. I hate the ones that come standard on the XI SP...

I say get the 162's as an option with the sport pacakge. You can change the tires later if you want to.

Don't risk a 40k+ car (and your life, and the life of your passengers and other motorists).

My plan is to run the 162s most of the year, and then order a set of 159s (the attractive 17s that come standard, not the awful 17s that come on the XI sport package). The wheels are expensive - 285/each from bmwwheels.com, plus the cost of snow tires, but worth not having to run 162s in the winter.

That's the setup I have. I use my 199's in the non-winter months and use my 159's w/ Dunlop M3's in the winter. Works out great.

Hi,

Excuse me if I jump in here.

Are you saying that the 162's are not good performers in the rain/cold then. If so, why?

I am about to order the car, but undecided on the wheels. I do 40k plus miles per year, mostly in the british wet weather.

My friend wrote off my last car, a celica, aqauplaning in the wet (I'd almost done it a few times too), and iv'e also noticed it is more prominent on cars with bigger wheels/lower profile tyres.

Cheers?

The past few NY winters the city seems to go in panic mode which ends up being good with the plows doin their fighter jet formation thing. From what iv'e gathered from the members here the xi is .6" higher than std. and the sport lowers the car .2". So we are talkin .8". Someone correct me if im wrong.

I've decided to go with an E90i with sport package (of course). I'll probably switch out the 325i ZSP 17x8.0/8.5 for 18" aftermarket and will use all-seasons (Pirelli m/s, Mich. pilot sprt a/s)...probably by the first winter too . On occasion go back to the stock 17" just to get my moneys worth out of them and definitely use one for spare (until we find a spacesaver). I do realize 18" even w/all seasons are not as good in snow but I want to replace the stock wheels with something eventually . To answer previous post, the 18x8.0/8.5 stock is suicide for the winter (wide tires , staggered, and most of all summer performance tires). If NYC winters end up owning my ass i guess ill just use the money i didnt spend on an E90xi and get a set of winters.

Obviously i'll be up to my ears in rims.
My ultimate desire: to run 18x8.5 (all-season) all-around for the whole year if possible and it very well may be fine.

Possible solution??? I'm willing to stay off the roads if need be and burn through those 17x8.0/8.5 'perf. runflats'. I hear using a staggered winter set is no no! But since i'll have the extra 17x8.0/8.5 (staggered) stock rims lying around would it be SO bad running winters on these?

please advise me.
All I drive are fwd camrys and awd rav4s all on all seasons. I need to be saved.

It's the other way around (but the total difference is correct):

[ xi ] <-- 0.2" --> [ i ] <-- 0.6" --> [ i w/ SP ]
[ xi ] <------------ 0.8" ------------> [ i w/SP ]
