I have three "luxury", plus a few everyday watches...

My three luxury are a Breitling Colt Superocean with yellow face, Omega Seamaster James Bond Casino Royale LE, and an Omega Planetocean (I think) James Bond Quantum of Solace LE (ok, I'm a big James Bond fan! )

just for fun, this is the most complicated mechanical watch and the most expensive watch in the world at $1.5M.

PAM 310 among a few others. I've had a love for watches almost as long as I've had for cars. What can I say? I appreciate fine pieces of machinery.

Yep. Awesome stuff . I get that not everybody appreciates watches, but appreciating the craftsman ship in a car or a watch are similar things. Lots of intricacies that make them what they are. Here's a pic of a few other watches (some of which I've gotten rid of) .. will update when I add to my collection .

the hammy gets a lot of wrist time. currently on a different strap. 24mm alcantara strap notched down to 22 to fit the watch

What are some good budget watches you guys can recommend. I'm still young, working my first job out of college and need to save for my eventual M3

For now I am looking in the <$200 range (the cheaper the better for me)

At this stage I am not looking for something that will last generations and I really do not care for brands in general. I tend to prefer leather/nylon straps, but I am open to other suggestions.

I have one watch, a Rolex Datejust Oyster Perpetual, and I love it. It's simple and not too flashy. A question for all you Rolex members, do you actually have the watch serviced regularly? I've had mine for almost 10 years and I've never taken it in for service. It's held up well. It loses a little bit of time each month but I just reset it........

If you really want a nice watch, save your money and use your phone to tell time.

Its funny, most people assume a car is a better way to spend money than a watch, but of the three nice watches I have, two have almost doubled in MSRP (so I could resell for only marginal losses) from when I bought them 10 years ago (way to go Swiss Franc!!). The other is a little newer but still retails for about 50% more than I paid

So true. I bought my Sub back in '08 when the economy was in the tanks. Bought it brand new with a unheard of 30% discount. Now that Rolex actually increased the price on all of their line up, I could easily resell it at the same price I bought it for or maybe lose a couple hundred. Not bad. I too suggest u save some money to buy a nice watch rather then rushing. If u must have a watch for now, then I suggest perhaps a Swiss Army? They are quite nice for the money.

Don't know about most but I don't plan on servicing mine until it just doesn't work anymore or doesn't keep time well..

Agreed - the estimate servicing interval is guidance and it really doesn't need to be serviced until it starts losing much more time than the specs indicate (which is usually 5-10 years depending on the brand). The cost will be pretty substantial but most companies perform a complete overhaul where they take apart the whole watch and replace all wear-parts and polish up the outside (replacing the crystal if necessary).

the price of watches have really gone up(20-30%) over the past 6 months due to weak euro since most high end watches made in Switzerland...pissing me off...wanted to get Jaeger LeCoutre Diving Master GMT

My dad's friend is a watch repairman/expert. Unless u swim or submerge ur watch very often in water, there's really no need to send it in for service every couple of years or so as per the manual. He also recommends that the watch be worn until it is starting to lose time significantly.

a weak euro = stronger dollar = lower european watch price to american customer

The swiss Franc, I believe, has held up better than the Euro but may still be down compared relative to the dollar

Not only is your logic flawed, it obviously isnt true since watch prices have shot up by 30% over the past year in the US.

With the weaker euro and swiss franc(swiss weakening their currency recently also), the cost to produce the watch in Switzerland goes up, they will pass that onto their customers no matter where they live.

If you understand currencies you will know all currencies going down together no matter what DXY is trading at...hence raw material costs going up everywhere...even if USD relatively stronger than the euro, will not translate to lower prices in the US.

I don't know want to start an argument, but I assure you my argument is not flawed. Other than precious metal inputs (gold and platinum) the raw materials account for a tiny fraction of the cost of a premium watch. If you need fewer dollars per euro or swiss franc (as has been the case over the past 6 months) a watch made in switzerland will cost fewer dollars. if there are company specific changes that overwelm the short term currency volatility, swiss made watches can still rise in price.

The reason my watches have appreciated so much over the longer time is highly related to the dollar weakening over the past 10 years by a significant amount since I bought them. The change in MSRP has moved almost exactly with the chart below over the long term.

I'm only going into this detail to educate on one of the meaningful factors that effect watch prices. If the USD strengthens over the next 10 years, don't expect your watch to appreciate/hold its value like it has the last 10 years.
