Pretty much like a TS-E lens from what I understand; it uses a ball swivel to concentrate the sharp portion of the image in the frame and the double glass optics seems razor sharp as per the reviews and sample images. But lets not forget that 80% of the image will be intentionnaly blurred.

I want to develop my macro shots into a more creative fashion and use it for my newborn's baby book as well. So I know this wont be an everyday-use lens.

So for the expectations I have vs. the price paid; pretty sure this lens will nail it.
What kind of multiplication can we expect in macro use?

I dont expect any. Didnt read anything about it; I should have used the Close-up word instead of macro.

But will definitely try it with 2X TC (Which i'm pretty sure wont work) and extension tubes to see where it lead me.

It got a 50mm focal so you need to be really close to your subject. It will be still-life oriented closeup shots for sure.

Canon Rumors is reporting that a 6D firmware upgrade this May or June will bring f8 AF to the center focus point. I'm not holding my breath, but if it happens, I'll be buying a 1.4x TC for the new 400 5.6.

Sad but true. It's sucking my wallet bare. Reminds me of my E38.

You got a bad one, I've had mine for 8 years and it costs very little.
Then again, I don't drive it.

Yosemite, Bridal Veil creek, the day after Thanksgiving, 2011. 30 second exposure using ND filter on the 24-105. This was my first try at long exposure stuff.
Totally unrelated to the picture, my X1 was built today and has passed its quality inspection

It worked out nicely. I hope your next effort had a bit more water flow.

I'm dying waiting for the f/8 upgrade to my 5D MkIII next month. In the next week or two I'll order my EF 2.0X TC-III to take full advantage of the firmware update.

I know that it'll be slow, but 1000mm for the cost of a TC is hard to beat.

Let me offer a warning. I tried my 400/f5.6 with a 1.4TC on my 7D with taped contacts. it worked, but it was extemely slow. Don't expect to shoot anything that moves.

I racked up 3k miles/mo on mine. Things broke quickly and often. Still, I loved that car. Now that I do less than 400 miles/mo, it would be good to own something like that.

No doubt. Just sitting birds and such. I'm looking forward to your 1000mm pics, though.

Lol, I think we've all done it. Hard to keep track of when both titles show up in your email as "OFFICIAL..."

P.S. that's exciting news about the x1. Will be waiting for pictures in fun locations

I was almost enthusiast when Nikon leaked that they were about to release a Nano glass 80-400mm lens for about 2.5k.

I was fooled by the price. Big time. For that kind of money, I was expecting a fast and sharp 2.8 lens like my 70-200 can be for less then 2k. But the lens is variable aperture from 4.5-5.6.

What was Nikon thinking? I will wait for samples before making my final opinion; but I dont want a lens that slow for that kind of money.

Agreed. That's a lot of dough for a variable aperture. The Canon 100-400L is nearly the same FL range for $1000 less.

Estimated price high- Release price low.
Wow, what a bargain, I'll buy that before they all get snatched up!
Or, WTF are they thinking?
Your choice.
The 100-400 is a good lens too.

Yeah, I have been really happy with the versatility of my 100-400. It broke once, but is now even better after I got it back from CPS.

I'm pleased with my 100-400, just wish I used it more. My 70-200 2.8 has stolen a lot of its thunder.

You can leave it with me when you stop by then. The 70-200 MkII is supposed to be fairly unreal.

The Golden gate bridge will no longer be accepting cash as of the end of the month. So, don't stop to pay when you hit the toll plaza. They take a picture of your plate and send you the bill.
Since it is a CDN plate I doubt they have access to that database nor will the Canadian government care.
So much for saving money by laying off people

I got trapped on a toll road in Toronto once. No signs that I could see that warned it was a toll road. No cash payment either. I got a bill in the mail a few months later with fines and such. If I remember right, I ended up paying about $18 to go a mile or so.
