What is this vent?

Does anyone know what this vent is for? I was cleaning leaves out of it and I got a few in there and I dont know if it's a problem or not.

Lol, I'm assuming you never had a car before or know what's under the hood.

This is the drain for the cowl. Try it! Pour water down the cowl and watch it work. !

Never appreciated how flimsy they were to fit in there- there should be some grooves or mechanism to really snap them in place.

I could never remove them without dropping crap into that hole anyway- stupid design.

There are two finger shaped provisions, put your fingers on/in them and pull straight up.

My non turbo 328i has the same drains. As I live in a wooded area, the trick is to gingerly remove the filters without all the crud falling down into the drains. (I'll try Miller's method next time.)

And a long coat hanger is helpful if and when the drains get plugged up.
