A light dusting of snow?

Seriously, I don't understand how 1-2" of snow can bring these southern cities to a halt.
The snow isn't nice and powdery like you get up north, it is a bastardized half-frozen slurry. It freezes together or melts and re-freezes rapidly and you essentially end up with an inch of ice on the entire road (and everywhere else)

Like you said, still not a huge problem if you know how to drive in it. I came from upstate NY so I get around fine, but most of these people see one raindrop hit the windshield and their mind just can't take it anymore, and they end up foaming at the mouth going 5mph everywhere. So they don't handle snow or ice too well

People that live down here DO stay home most of the time when they are told to... That is what causes things to come to a halt.

And as mentioned above, because of the warm/moist air that most systems here have, we get some sort of mixed ice/snow/rain combo.

I like how you phrased that.

In Indiana, unfortunately, we get the light, powdery stuff sometimes and then the next day, we'll get wet slush snow from hell.

Worst of both worlds I guess.

Takes about 12" to shut us down for a day.

To those folks in the NE, or to our friendly neighbors to the north, 12" is probably nothin' at all.

Last night's storm left the streets around Denver a sloppy mess with rain turning to sleet, then snow. Combine that with the temperature dropping cause the streets to go from wet to slush, then to a thick layer of slush turned ice becoming covered by snow as the storm progresses. Even being in Colorado, there were quite a few people unprepared for this morning's commute getting stuck on slight hills due to inadequate tires.

Another estimated 18" expected between now and Wednesday. I need to invest in a snowmobile.

I already have a 4' drift in front of the house. Looks like we'll be sledding off the roof pretty soon!

No wonder US talks about bad economy and huge debts when half the country stays at home for days when it comes and inch or two with snow!!

I went to work on thursday, by car and plane, it almost fell down over 15" inches of snow some places that day. The airplane was an hour late though, but that`s due to aviation regulations and de-icing.

Hur hur...

Snow has little, if anything, to do with the state of our rampant government spending.

I would love to get out of here to somewhere warm for a week. CA, FL, the desert, I don't really care at this point.

It got up to 45 degrees when we had some rain this past weekend. It was shorts and t-shirt weather.

That would be fantastic. It's embarrassing how long it has been since I've been able to hit the outdoor/rifle range.
