What's the difference? I think the pre-LCI held up better on my 2009 E92.
Agreed. I see more worn start buttons on the newer models. Don't recall seeing an 07-09 with this problem. I've seen many 10's and up with it when shopping for an e90.

Evidence of BMW taking the cheap way out once again...

I think the previous owner of my car was someone with long nails. The window buttons all had some peeling. Same with the start button. Good thing my SA got them replaced under warranty somehow.

I have this issue too on my 2011 E90. I thought my wife did something, so I was blaming her (like using some kind of hand lotion or something!)

Also, anybody have this bubbling thing on the I-drive controller? I'll try the sharpie trick on the start button, not sure what to do on the I-drive...

I have seen that BMW has switched to a matte finish in recent years for the controllers. I think it is due to this kind of issue coming up. In either case, you should be able to replace just that part: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...17&hg=65&fg=45

Item 2. They have two options. You want P/N 65829353029. ECS tuning has it: http://www.ecstuning.com/ES2727640/

Mine had this when I bought it with only 25,000 miles on it. I'm thinking of swapping it out for the Pre-lci version some day.

I had the exact same problem and it was an eye sore for me. I took it out when I wrapped my Wood Trim and I just plasti dipped it. Took 15 minutes (3 light coats) and it looks like new. I'll post pictures soon

Cool, thanks for the info.

I kind of hate to buy a new part if it's just going to happen again, though. The bubbling happened within 2 years, so it seems like a pain to replace it every 2 years.

I can tell if I rub the bubbles, the chrome coating will just flake off, looking even worse. I might either try the gray version or see if anyone has an aftermarket one with a different coating. Thanks!

Well mine is three years old now and looks pristine.

I would be careful about replacing with the grey version. It will not match the chrome on the knob itself.
