Should I be concerned if I gave a stranger my cell phone number?

I am filling up the car at the gas station and this guy and his friend drives up and starts talking to me about my 335. We talked cars for 5 minutes and he was surprisingly familiar with the Dinan tune and was really curious about it. By the way, he was driving a Subaru WRX. Anyway, the end of the conversation he asked if I would be interested in some sort of alternate part time earning potential. I said why not, send me an email. He said that he preferred to deal with people directly and asked for a phone number. I gave him my cell number (stupid). He said he would call me in a couple of days. Also, he tells me the area code will be 574 because he was from Indiana. As he is walking away, my phone rings and it is the 574 number. I didn't answer. Then he drives off and didn't put any gas in his car. So then I am thinking this guy came into the gas station specifically to talk to me. I had a wierd feeling afterwards. Is there any reason I should be concerned?

Im scared myself. Creepy. Just think about it, you are sleeping in your bed, you look into the dark of your room, and you see the guy. OMG........ If I had a cell phone #, I could easily get someones address thru many ways. Lock up your house/doors, be aware.

Your phone rang because he entered the number into his phone and dialed it to save it. I would not worry too much.

I was thinking that too. Maybe I am just too paranoid.

This stuff happens all the time. He isn't looking to steal your car or rob your house, hes looking to get you involved an a piramid scheme.

I've had countless random people come up to me in home depots, best buys ect. trying to strike up a random converstation and then mention some sort of part-time on the side job that pays lots of money

That's all he was doing, don't sweat it, just tell him your not interested if he calls.

However I do wonder what/who these people are related to because I've seen it a lot from Bethesda MD to Richmond Va

+1 pyramid scheme for sure. Why on earth would you give a stranger at a gas station your number anyways (unless it's a hot lady ) Just tell him to buzz off when he calls, can't stand people trying to sell me stuff or get me involved in any type of selling scheme.

I completely agree. I felt really stupid about it afterwards. I don't know where my head was at.

I hope you are right. I tried a reverse lookup on the number and all I can get is Osceola, Indiana. No business name. Thanks for your input TMNT.

The worst is when your friends start trying to get you into it. I just wanna be like, WTF are you thinking?

I wouldn't be too worried, my cell # is on my facebook & myspace. Pretty much anyone has access to it and it has never been abused.

If giving your number to anyone you haven't known for a while (incl. women..never know who's psycho out there!) just give out a grandcentral number which fwds calls to you. That way you can (1) block any numbers you don't want coming through and (2) record calls if you're really paranoid after picking up. If you need an invite, let me know.
