Dell XPS Problems ANYONE OWN ONE OF THESE POS SYSTEMS?
Hey sorry, I've been over the phone with dell support for over 2 hrs now. I was wondering does anyone own a dell xps? and If so is your 5.1 or 7.1 integrated sound working? Because mine isn't and the only solution after 2 hrs is to send me a new motherboard WITHOUT the audio converters...

I have an XPS laptop and XPS desktop. The mobo in my desktop went bad a few months back. Called up DELL, they overnighted the parts and sent a tech out the next day to install them. I was real impressed. No other issues with either computer. The laptop made it through my last Iraq deployment

=( I guess you get good deals for a reason...when I got my dell I understand why I usually build my own systems... because dell parts are cheap and no good. All the boards and parts are pretty much OEM and extremely low quality. The ram looked like flimsy paper, which I replaced right away. Aside from that at least technical support has been helpful. Their shipping me a motherboard and having a technician install it in 3-5 business days.

I have a VAIO laptop and an XPS 700 desktop. I would've never bought a xps laptop. Everything on my system works fine, minus the design of some of the port openings.
My vaio on the other hand... a broken headphone jack means my speakers dont work and my headphones dont work. Fantastic

I'm in the market for a new desktop...this Dimension 8300 is getting old, and full of crap. Easier to replace...
I wish there was good software that helped you remove those unwanted processes (and not just stop them). Any tips? |

Sony products are known to self destruct right after the warranty expires. I say NO to VAIO. I experienced first hand VAIO notebooks are unreliable at the workplace.

I think the reason why DELLS are so crappy these days is that DELL has been laying people off and I don't think workers really care about what they do anymore.

Hahahaha Sony's are pieces of shit. Probably the worst PC manufacturer out there. The one and only Sony I ever had was garbage as well as the only computer I've ever had fail on me.
If you buy a desktop computer from a manufacturer, you're an idiot, simple as that. You get similar/better performance for far less money if you build it yourself and a child could do it. (Special machines sometimes excepted i.e. $300 POS desktops or machines in non-traditional form factors, some exceptions as well for unique case designs if you've got 8k to burn on a Voodoo or Alienware) Don't buy, build your own PC. Laptops are an exception for now since they're so proprietary with parts and shapes atm.

I never understood why people buy computer from manufacturers for desktops and I kind of understand, though FirstClass has a great point. Build your own computer from the ground up for the 1st time and you'll never go back. Its qucik and simple

Dell's are actually pretty good. This thread was created simply because your integrated sound burnt out... That is probably the simplest hardware problem you will ever have.
The solution is simple and it doesn't even require contacting Dell. Go to a best buy, or a Fry's or anything. Buy a SoundBlaster Audigy 7.1 sound card. It will probably cost you $25. Go home, take the cover off your computer (I know its scaryyyy in there) and plug in your sound card to the slot on the motherboard that matches the plug on the bottum of the sound card. (Keeping it all in simple layman's terms.) The toughest part of this procedure is to initialize the new sound card in your BIOS (the optional menu that you can enter when your computer is first booting up and doing system checks.) To enter your BIOS is different for a few different computers. But most either require you to hit the delete or F2 keys just after the boot up and POST'ing. (POST stands for Pre Operating System Test) Once in BIOS, just go to the peripherals tab, and find the audio device and change it from integrated to the SB audigy. Of course, you could just deal with the DELL techsupport and go through the entire ordeal of sending in your computer to them through the mail, letting them fix it and then mailing it back to you. The choice is yours.

Every company that makes computers uses various components from different distributors. And just with ALL manufacturing there will always be a few out of every run that have imperfections, where all the screw holes didn't line up perfectly for example. You never hear about the units that work flawlessly and never fault. Only the bad, broken, and burnt out. Even Dell uses components from other companies. They certainly don't make every peice in a computer in-house. So when your HD goes out in your Dell built computer, you should be mad at the HD manufacturer, not at Dell for simply plugging it into your computer when you ordered that specific part online.
I should make a computer PSA.... or maybe my own computer builder company. Who wants me to built them a decent computer for $1100 flat, haha.
