Heard of scraping??

So my co worker just told me about this thing called "Scraping". This is where people purposely lower their cars (which is normal) and then speed over speed bumps and they enjoy their cars scraping against the bumps...
Or they just speed over bumps....

My co workers friend even has a sticker on this lowered gti that says "I scrape".

What is the point of this?! Why would anyone want to damage their bumpers/shocks or their cars in general?!

Its a ricer thing. I see it all the time with the JDM guys in my area. I have never seen someone with a slammed car speed over speed bumps, but they seem to take some sort of pride in hearing their car scrape up driveways or over bumps.

I heard about this a long time ago, but it was lowered truck guys scraping their frame on the highway. The smarter guys would have bolt on plates that would do the scraping so they didn't do too much perminant damage to the vehicle. Videos did look kind of cool at night when they left a trail of sparks.

This is nothing new, they just put a name to it, I knew kids when I was in high school who would purposely find places to bottom out their cars to see if they could create sparks and this was before lowering was popular. Think about an old car which sat 6 to 8 inch off the ground and what you had to do to make it hit and make sparks.

I never understood why someone would destory their car this way

With that much clearance, it would have been called "curb jumping" rather than "scraping", one would think.

A lot of rat rod guys do this. For them, I guess it kind of makes sense being that they are burly looking platforms, adds that extra character.

Why anyone would want to scrape any other car than that is beyond me.

Would make for a great craigslist ad though;

"2002 Grand Prix, 189k miles, scrapes like boss, best scrape in town, wow so awesome, brings all the boys to the yard"

yeah we use to put spark plugs in the end of the tail pipe and run the carb rich and make flames shot out the back. I buddy of mind had functioning side pipes on his Mustang and ripped out the spark arrestors and pull up next to a car and toast the sides of their car with flame. It funny when your young but you look back an wonder what we all were thinking.
