Yeah this is too bad. Good thing XP was easy to hack and all. I have a couple disks with codes that should work for as long as I need them to

I have Vista... hate it.

I think the Windows cycles will go like this. Windows 98 -> XP -> Windows 7
Nobody ever really used Windows 2000 cause it was shit and the same deal with Vista. Those two were/will be skipped right over.

I switched over to Mac about 6 months ago...one of the best decisions I ever made. The transition is a lot smoother than most people think.

Nope. From our IT, windows is going to stop supporting XP in the next 2-3 years on a corporate level so I bet a lot of companies will upgrade before then so they can get (a ton of) testing done before XP is no longer supported.

Got a Mac, I love it. I have XP on my mac as well for things like Matlab & VBA.

We're discussing operating systems here, not hardware. Bootcamp means you're using Windows. Also, no Mac hardware ever produced will out perform my PC, which only cost ~$2,000 over a year ago.

Windows 7 is coming out (officially) in 2010 isn't it? Gates said it'd be out in 2009 in a speech. Then again given Microsoft's track record with on time releases I'd expect it in 2011.

See, this is what I don't understand. iTunes definitely works just fine in Vista, flash drives work flawlessly, and once you're all updated, updates definitely don't happen every day, but if they did, big deal. I like getting updates and knowing MS is constantly working to fix problems and update the OS. Since when is that a bad thing?

For as much as people have problems with Vista about, I've pretty much not had a single one of those problems. Drivers are an issue because companies are lazy and don't update fast enough, but that's not particularly Microsoft's fault that everyone else is lazy.

I dunno, I just know I have multiple Vista machines which I manage to run absolutely perfectly. If the issue was Vista being so horrible then it wouldn't work right for anyone.

That is not necessarily true. MS has a tremendously difficult job making sure their OS is compatible with the multitude of pc components out there. There is a lawsuit currently in the court dealing with the Vista Capable label MS was bestowing on some new pc's that had a host of problems. The case caused MS to release internal email (here) that seem to show MS was well aware of the problems.

My favorite passage is when Mike Nash, Corporate Vice President, Windows Product Management states that Vista turned his computer into nothing but an "email machine."

Yes, their logo program had issues, but that was clear from the start. I have hardware that said it was Vista Compatible and didn't even have any drivers at all, they just decided to say that the hardware WOULD would if they made drivers some day.

I can give you that MS dropped the ball with the logo program, but at the same time, I see the logo program as a validation for people to be sure that their components are compatible. I still think it's the third party's responsibility to make sure their hardware works too rather than taking advantage of MS's lax certification process.

But still, in the end, this is all driver plugins to the OS. Drivers cause 95% of the crashes in Windows, not the OS itself. I just get tired of people saying "MS Sucks, Windows Sucks" when in reality it's companies like NVIDIA releasing horrible drivers and crashing the OS constantly that make it look like Windows has the problems. Once you have stable drivers, Vista is fast and rock solid.

I think there is a shared responsibility between the hardware vendors and MS when it comes to compatibility. MS wants people to upgrade, they have to make their product work with what their customers have.

The single Vista machine I worked with was a brand new laptop. I had zero issues with drivers. What I had issues with was that it asked me if I was sure every single time I did something (even my 8 y.o. son gives up after a while) and the SAME update kept wanting to be installed every time we got connected to the wireless.
The other main issue was teh tremendous amount of circling I did between control panel apps to get teh freaking wireless configured to use encryption.

I'm not sure why you had trouble setting up wireless. When it detects your network all you have to do is click it in the tray icon and it will ask you for your wireless key.
