I'll usually leave a dollar or two in bucket tip jars, because lets face it, splitting that between 4 people sucks as it is. Might as well make them have some feeling of excitement.

What I can't stand are those people who expect tips standing on street corners but don't provide me any service except wasting my tax dollars...., for the life of me I can't remember what these people are called...

Street performers...some perform the art of sitting.

Is that what they're called? Looked like he was playing the trombone behind some bushes for some dude, kind of upset because it muffled the music, so I didn't leave a tip in his bucket that said "Jesus is my light".

I tip 20% pretty much across the board. The math is easier and the difference between 18% and 20% is a rounding error anyway. 15% is considered an insult around here and I actually get rolled eyes when I pick up takeout and put an X through the tip box and write the total (but I still do it anyway).

What I find really annoying is when you go to a foreign country where tipping is not standard and they assume that because you're an American, you will tip. It's amazing how quickly they've learned to expect it. It happened to me a few times in Rome when I left a Euro on the table after ordering a pizza and a beer.

I will also say that those who tip on the subtotal are just flat out cheapskates. What does it cost you to tip on the full amount? A few extra jingly coins? Oh, and if you leave coins instead of rounding up to the next dollar, you're also cheap.

I agree on the 20% across the board reasoning and it's why I do it as well - it's easy math and for the most part, the difference is not much. Unfortunately (for them), I usually will not tip more if the service is excellent. But I will tip less if it wasn't. They are also subject to how easy it is for me to tip them. For example, we ordered a pizza the other day and because I had no small bills, the delivery guy got an $8 tip, where normally it would be half that. On the flip side, had I only had enough for a $2 tip, he probably would have gotten that instead.

One thing I try and do is give the tip to the waiter/waitress directly and not leave it on the table. I've heard of bus boys pocketing most of the tip for themselves and that's just not cool.

As far as excessive tipping, I find it funny/annoying that the serve-yourself frozen yogurt chains have a tip jar!

Why on EARTH would you have to tip someone if you are PICKING IT UP? At the local pizza place, they will offer you a free drink if you're waiting for it to get out of the oven. Of course that will result in a tip. But if you're just picking up and rolling out, NO NEED for a tip.

I usually tip the carry out people a buck or two, because lets face it, they likely NEVER get a tip, and when I was 16, I would get stoked if someone gave me so much as a dollar. I'd rather give my dollar to them then dickhole hobo begging on a corner.

I agree on little or no tip for poor service but I will disagree with the no tipping when picking up a pizza. I don't leave 20% but do leave a something. At least in my local pizza place you pick up your order at the bar. The bartender takes your order over the phone and when you arrive for pick up, they walk back to the kitchen, assembles your order including condiments etc and brings it to you. In my mind that is not much different than the service a waiter performs during table service. They are taking your order, responsible for correctness and ultimately bringing the food to you. So I leave a few dollars for the effort, assuming the order is correct! Maybe it goes back to my years in the service industry, managing a restaurant for almost 10 years....

What gets to me in terms of tipping are the tip jars that have popped up everywhere. Stop at you local 7-11/Circle K and there is a tip jar there! What is the tip for, punching a couple of keys on the cash register???

I had a mattress delivered a few years back and had to take a half day off from work to be home for the 4 hour window. They showed up 40 minutes after the end of the window and actually had the balls to say "We happily accept tips if you think we did a good job". I said "oh ok" and gave him nothing. My favorite part was the stalling to give me more time to get my wallet - which never happened.

It's a pizza. It's in a box and he hands it to you over the counter. No condiments required!

You must never order dinner for a family of four including two teenage boys! It is usually more than just a pizza. And my restaurant gives packets of grated cheese and crushed red peppers with every pizza. I count those as condiments...

And even if it was just a pizza I would still leave a couple of dollars. The process from order taking to retrieving the food from the kitchen is no different than table service. I assume you don't stiff the wait staff when you actually eat a pizza in the restaurant? Assuming the order was handled correctly...

IF I run into the gal and she gives the wife extra bottles of shampoo/conditioner, I will spot tip.

I have once....., only because she removed a stain on one of my favorite shirts when I was out of town. Other than that, I didn't think there would be any reason to? They make an hourly wage that isn't associated with expecting tips, right?

Hotel cleaning staff? No, unless they perform some extraordinary service like Billup received...

This should be done when you first get there if staying for more than one night. The things they can do to f*ck with you is scary!!!

I always tip the valet when I first pull up. And tell them you’ll take care of them again later. It gives me a piece of mind that my car will be in good hands.

I usually offer a tip IF he is actually going to do a real job and come hold it and shake it off for me and/or wipe depending on the situation.

I can dry my own hands and spray myself with cologne, thank you very much.

i believe the standard is on a scale. 15%, 18%, and 20%. 15% would be just met the grade and 20% being great.

@kscarrol I know that when we do "to go" orders at the bar I have recently become part of, the kitchen gets any and all of the tip. The guys back there are making more than enough money and almost nobody tips them when they come to pick their orders up but when they do, the kitchen staff has a jar that they have been saving up all of the tips in so they can do something as a group for free when winter rolls around and we reduce kitchen hours.

I personally never really have had much reason to tip on an order that I had to drive/walk to get myself because the majority of the places that I'm doing that at have somebody who all they do is run the front of house. The person who sits at the register and maybe answers the phone in a timely fashion, all while looking completely bored and upset about the fact that they have to work while their friends do something fun isn't going to get anything from me. Now, if they are friendly/have a way to go the extra mile while either on the phone or while I'm there, I will throw them some extra cash, but that is so rare anymore that I can't remember doing it.

@KingOfJericho - The people that basically stand around and wait for a tip piss me off more than any other. If I was going to give you a tip, trust me, I would have had whatever amount I was planning on ready for you already. The balls that some people have to basically say "you should tip me" is unreal. I have tipped the cleaning staff at some hotels that I tend to stay at on a regular basis while traveling for work. I always seem to find a few little extras (Mints, cookies, one actually left a bottle of wine, etc.) but I don't do it unless I'm there for an extended period of time or in the situation mentioned above.
