2011 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix

We all know the RBRs are FAST last year, and even faster two weeks ago in Australia. But who will come up next and challenge the bulls?

McLaren showed that they had a "chance" to catch up. Who will give it another shot this coming weekend? The Prancing horse or the silver arrow?

I'd love to see both Saubers finishing top 8 this weekend. They both well deserved to be in the points in Australia.

Pirelli will supply the teams with extra sets of dry-weather tyres to use during Friday’s practice sessions at this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix. The additional rubber will be an experimental version of the manufacturer’s hard compound.

“We never believe in standing still at Pirelli, which is why the teams will have two extra sets of slick tyres available to them during Friday's free practice sessions for evaluation purposes,” explained Pirelli’s motorsport director Paul Hembery. “With testing not allowed during the season, this gives us a valuable opportunity to gather more data and feedback, while it also gives the teams an interesting taste of what could be coming in the future."

After enjoying a successful opener at last month’s Australian Grand Prix, Hembery acknowledges the hotter temperatures expected in Malaysia will test Pirelli’s tyres even more and he is expecting some drivers to make four stops during the Sepang race.

"We were absolutely thrilled by our Grand Prix debut in Australia, but we're aware that Malaysia should be a very different proposition, with higher temperatures and increased degradation,” he added. “We said all along that we would be seeing two to three pit stops in Australia, but in Malaysia I think that figure is likely to increase to three to four.”

Like in Melbourne, Pirelli have nominated their hard and soft compounds as the prime and option rubber respectively for Malaysia.

RB with KERS might put them in their own race! Hope that Ferrari figure out what the problem was last time out... Oh yeah, they are not as fast as Mcleran, RB's and maybe even Renault/lotus. Massa looks slower then ever and Alonso continues to push hard in another subpar car.

Looking forward to see if petrov can show another strong performance with the new lotus/Renault car. Can't imagine what Kubica would have done if he was piloting one. Been very impressed with petrov's driving in the last two races

you know, the one who was prob the most upset over Kubicas injury other than Robert himself, has to be Petrov. Cause people will continue to say this, I have been guilty of it myself. Maybe Petrov has improved enough to where he would be competitive w/ anyone just like Robert. Guess we have to wait another year to answer that one

Really excited for this race. Malaysia really shows the endurance of the drivers, and if rain creeps in it'll certainly be a great show. First DRS overtake in the wet? Yes, please.

PS: I have a feeling that Red Bull might run a less flexy front wing for this track because of the long straights and high speeds. Won't know for sure until Saturday, but its just a feeling.

Don't read any more into this statement than that. Not looking to start a discussion on it. We have plenty of other threads about that.

I think you are right, but it's a double edged sword for Petrov. While he loses his bar against which to measure himself, he now has a great chance to be the team leader and drive Renault where he wishes.

And man, Massa does not look happy at all in that press conference.

RBR is officially untouchable. MW is 1.7 secs clear of everyone else?

Also, HRT is in trouble, again. If my calculations are right, they need to be w/in 6 seconds of MW, and assuming that SV is quicker than MV, they are at minimum 2 seconds off the 107% time. Yikes
