Chevy Volt
http://www.chevrolet.com/electriccar/ (preproduction car) Really surprised there isn't a thread about this car yet. If GM manages to pull this one off, then high hat off to them. 100mpg is a big deal, and this car could really become an industry leader. So it seems like the American car-makers are headed in the right direction in terms of technology... but what about design? Fake mesh around the grill? The rest of the exterior looks great though, and I'm praying that they finally learn to make a car with a decent interior (fingers crossed). Let's see what happens.

One or two good cars to boost sales every so often is the problem with the big three. They need quality products across the whole line, not just a boost every so often. Think Chrysler 300. And now Camaro/Volt. And Ford maybe with its euro spec focus coming and redesigned Mustang.
Too many brands, too many rebadged copycats, without quality products. I do hope that Chevy is around long enough to make the Volt, because it will force the other companies to come up with better gas saving vehicles.

Did you guys know that GM spent $750million developing the Volt.
With that kind of money used, I hope they made something really special

The concept of the Volt is good tho. If only someone else would build it...

Because I am an enthusiast as I thought you all were. If you love cars why would you even consider driving an electric piece of crap? Unless you think that you are saving the world...
It has nothing to do with the quality of GM. I've owned 3 in my lifetime, and I would consider owning another such as the CTS V, Camaro, Vette, or G8. |

The car industry shouldn't just be about fast, enthusiastic cars. It should also be about safe, efficient, and technologically groundbreaking cars like this one. Comparatively speaking (considering their previous laughable hybrid attempts and the totally impractical EV1) I think its a big step in the right direction for GM. It certainly won't solve all their problems, at all, but it's definitely not another mistake (IMO). I was just surprised when you called it a piece of crap.

I think the production car looks cool. I wouldn't mind driving one of those as a daily driver. the only real problem I can point out its that GM targets only people who drive using 40 mpg per day. Does that mean that you run out of battery after 40 miles? If so, the market for this car should be very low...
If i was them i would be working on getting KERS technology incorporated into the car and maybe then they would get a decent amount of miles therefore increasing the amount of people who will actually buy one. |
