Extended Warranty; really extended

Can you buy a BMW extended warranty at any time, or just within a certain amount of miles 'till they say "NO"?

You can purchase it up until 3 years, 364.9 days/49,999.99 miles. After that you are toast.

I think you will also have to be the original owner of the car to be able to buy the BMW extended warranty.

What everyone said above is true. The only way to have the extended warranty without being the original owner is to purchase it as a CPO. If you are the original owner, then you can purchase the extended mechanical (and/or maintenance) warranty as long as the original warranty is still in force and effect.

This is what I got from a dealer:

BMW EXTENDED WARRANTY starts from your car's in service date, and does not cover the nav/idrive/cd player/ stereo components.
these are only marked up $100 dollars.

6 years or 100,000 miles $2825
7 years or 100,000 miles $3275

For non-BMW warranties, the best price and piece of mind is through Ford ESP, yes Ford. They now warrant non Ford vehicles. I would trust Ford more than any other warranty outfits, excluding BMW of course. Their price is very reasonable and their premiumcare is an exclusionary warranty which is what you want. That means that everything is covered except the components listed as exempted. They will also cover high tech items such as NAV systems whereas BMW wont.

I think I remember hearing that the price of the extended warranty increases the longer you wait to buy it. So for example if you buy it as you buy the car it's a lot cheaper than if you were to buy it the day before the original warranty expires, the the price is adjusted accordingly between those dates..

The dealer probably told you that because he/she wanted to sell you a warranty. I work in the industry and can tell you that most warranty companies do not discriminate between whether the car is brand new or has one day left before the warranty period expires.

Were you looking at Extracare vs. Premiumcare. You need to click the tab on the middle/top. Premiumcare is an exclusionary option that covers everything except items listed as not covered. Although NAV is not listed in the examples of what is covered, you should always confirm by looking at the contract of what is excluded. If NAV is not specifically listed, it is covered.

You are correct. My mistake.

I contacted my local dealership for their warranty, thread is here. Their warranty does not exclude NAV as well, but I will request a contract from ford to see specifically what it states as the process for claiming and some of the exclusions. The warranty from the dealer states you have to call their 1-800 number prior to going to the dealership to get it approved or else its not covered.
