I have done this and have the m trim cover on my 07 328i e90. I have the steering wheel trim with the silver left and right bottom corners and it fits perfect. The install took me 15-20 min and it looks great with the matching m shift knob. I did myself as well very easy just take your time and slowly get the cover trim out around the air bags circle then your golden removing the rest. The controls will stay on the trim until you remove a second set of screws which hold them in place especially the right control buttons.

I just wanted to personally Thank you for this DIY. Your instructions (and suggestion to buy this part from getbmwparts.com.) were so helpful. The supportive comments from the rest of the individuals on this thread were also valuable. I changed the trim out in my e90 in less than an hour and I was really taking my time. I bought the M3 version. It looks fantastic!
Thanks again. Last edited by BMWBias; 03-29-2012 at 08:15 PM.. |

I had the same problem with the tight wire so I un-did the screw that holds the button cluster to the plastic trim. The buttons on the left are only attached to the trim, not the whole steering wheel. The buttons on the left were tighter. The same size torx screw holds the buttons to the trim. Also, for anyone struggling to free the trim from behind the centre piece, there are two clips, one on each side at the top...sort of in the centre of the top wing pieces. I used a gentle flathead to pry the rubber backing up a little and the clips should release. Someone here said not to worry that they won't break....I would agree mostly. Seemed like a pretty tough piece of plastic. I just did it today so if anyone has any questions, message me. |

Had the rubbery stuff peeling off from previous owner. Popped off the trim carefully used Laquer Thinner to remove the rest of the rubbery texture, washed and painted with a satin. Whatcha think?

Great write up. Thanks much. Finally rid of the scratched wheel!
This is a 10 min job with no trim tools, and leaving the airbag on. Only hiccup for me, was when i reattached the left button module, i put the screw in the bottom rather than the top before remounting, which blocked the screw that ties in from behind the wheel. Doh. Even so, it was quick and easy, even with having to reset that screw. Be careful but firm, and the shimmy technique will squeeze the old one off. Then youll be home free |

Great write up. Literally took me 15 minutes from the time I got out the 1/4 inch ratchet, torx bit, and 3" extension. I needed no other tools. So nice to not have a worn trim piece any more. Thanks!
I switched out the original 335 for the Msport trim. I'm 6MT so no paddle shifters. Not sure if that is why this was so easy or not. To the poster above me, not sure why your buttons are not working, I did not disconnect the wiring going to the buttons, just unscrewed the one screw per side to get the button group off the trim, and then screwed it back on the new trim. |

And if you remove the airbag first as it should be done - the job takes total from start to finish of maybe 5mins, & that includes removing the Negative cable from battery as 1st step & replacing it as last...
Heck, I can swap out the entire steering wheel in 15mins which includes removing the airbag & trim

Hello,
I will do this for my e90 325i from 2005. I will try to do this without removing the airbag but I can't see the pictures in this guide. Can anyone post this for me again. Thx. |

Haven't checked out the full video yet to compare it to these instructions, but it might help. From skimming the posts above, quite a few say it's easier once the airbag is out, which this guy looks like he's already done. I'd hoped for a non airbag video.
PS The link above doesn't work anymore, so here's one to RealOEM: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...19&hg=32&fg=35 The part number for the basic one for multifunction buttons I believe is 32306783048 and one with M logo is 32307845527 Last edited by Lotus99; 06-30-2014 at 06:03 PM.. |

There is really no need to take out airbag. Once you unscrew the three screws at the back, you have to pull to your direction both of the upper parts and the bottom part so they can move freely. Then you have to move all trim a little down (2 or 3mm are OK) and then will see that on both upper parts there is a pin which is holding in the plastic of the steering wheel, the pin is right up of the keys on both sides. Unclip them and then you can move the trim a little more so have a gap between bottom part of airbag and the trim. Once you have this gap, just pull it toward you and then with fingers snatch first left part of trim after that it is easy to remove all together.

Looks awesome. How many coats of satin black? And what was your drying time?
