This is what I am most interested in. What codes (assuming there will be something) are thrown and what is their effect. I wouldnt be tuning with something like ecotune until after the 100k CPO warranty is up, so I've got another 2.5 years or so at my current mileage rate.

I believe no codes since NO fumes are going to clog the intake and I didnt see any sensors in the pictures taken

Looking at those pictures... I wonder if we could create end caps to completely remove the cooler. It looks like you could. Looking at the two points there are points where a cap with copper seal could be mounted.

Like the TDI egr cooler blockoff, if anybody had and installed one.

Ideas?

There will definitely be codes after the car is driven. Whether they affect fueling, boost, etc and how much is the big question.

Already have it figured out. Would need a flange at the bottom to hold the plug in and a thicker disc at the top for the band to hold . But I don't see the point in going through the extra trouble....

Of course there are codes, I have an SES light now, but this is expected. Can't scan it yet as I am waiting for my BT dongle.

On the subject of removing the EGR cooler completely, if someone has access to, it would be nice to check with an infrared camera if there are significant temperature differences between the inlet and outlet of the EGR cooler with the block offs.

You should see these BMW specific codes when you scan:

4B82 Exhaust recirculation-rate control,control deviation
4862 Air system, air to EGR mass flow, plausibility

The Ecotune remap can take care of those if you ask for it...

Thanks TDI,

I will ask Ecotune. I can't stand SES on the dash.

Thanks

I haven't seen anything negative with this, only positives. Here's some very detailed data comparing stock to EGR off behavior (in this case the EGR off mode was triggered by a combination of other things... but I see basically the same with EGR blocking plate installed). Also, power/torque comparisons show no negative impacts.

As others said, Yes. You will get codes. The DDE will know right away that the system is not operating as it thinks it should (there's a temp probe in that loop that it looks at to see if temps move when it opens/closes things).

I'm certain your tuner could do like Ecotune and just code those out if you don't want to see the fault light.

I like the simplicity of removing the entire cooler as well. As iaknown mentions, you need the flange off of the inlet end of the cooler though. I'm wanting to determine if UK EGR coolers have the same flange.

TDI scored a US spec EGR cooler off of ebay and cut it up. I presume he used that flange. If not, TDI do you want to sell me that flange please?

Otherwise, there are many many Euro EGR coolers on ebay but not sure if that flange is the same shape. It sure looks the same though. Its not so much the expense of just trying and seeing but also it is a considerable expense to ship from Europe to Texas.

Yes, used that flange to hold the copper plug in place. Although, after pulling the EGR cooler off and looking at the manifold port, I'd think you could make a simple flat metal blocking plate with bolt holes that could be used to press a "cork" of some kind into that orifice (maybe iaknown's already made piece?). If not, bet iaknown could fab a fabulous custom item up that would work well for this application if he was so inclined. He seems exceptionally handy in this area.

I went to UK ebay last night. Even though the M57 coolers look different on the EGR end, they have the same flexi-fin tube construction on exhaust manifold end. The flange piece sure looks to be the same part as our's. I suppose I could remove mine and make a drawing of the flange and have it machined. It would be so much easier to buy a junk cooler and cut the flexi-tube off to get that flange. I will not butcher my OEM one.

Lowest cost used cooler (with proper flange) was about 39 pounds ($65 US). Perhaps I could go over to the 330d threads and ask one of those guys to provide some measurements.

Yes, iaknown has already made a nice "cork". I'm planning to buy his kit. It is likely that fabbing a new flange will be similar cost to buying UK cooler with all of the shipping over to me.

Perhaps I can ask if any one on this forum has a cracked one they wish to sell to me. Not sure if the X5D cooler has same flange or not. I will go look on realoem.

...... a bit later. Realoem shows X5D uses same part for the "front" cooler. Here is the link:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...70&hg=11&fg=50

I've read of several X5 guys having to change theirs from cracking.

Any X5 guys out there have a junk front cooler they will sell to me? It would be p/n 11717812513

I tried to PM you about getting a set of the block off plates. Your mail limit has been reached and I cannot send you the message.
