t1i vs d5000

hey guys i'm looking at getting an entry level dslr and have narrowed it down to either the canon t1i or the nikon d5000. i would be getting the kit lens combo to start and hopefully work my way up to better lenses as i get better with photography. does canon or nikon offer easier upgrades for lenses? can anyone help me out with my decision? looks like the canon shoots better video which is a plus for me but the nikon might take a little bit sharper of pictures. also i wouldnt really be taking too many 'action' shots..with the exception of maybe some rolling shots of my car once in a blue moon. photo experts help me out

D5000 here. Really happy with it. DSLR's are complicated, this is my first one and I am still figuring stuff out. I have a lot to learn, but I was in the same boat as you are and now you see my pick. Haven't used a Canon yet, so I can't say anything about it. I think either one will be a reasonable purchase.

I think it just comes down to personal preference. Since you don't have any lenses, go and find a shop that'll let you play with both models. My guess is overall they are similar, but their functionality and user-friendliness may be different.

I don't have experience with either of those models, but I've been a Canon owner for over a decade now and have no regrets.

I tried out the D5000 and a Canon, it was one model lower than the t1i (forgot). Both cameras had the same lens kits... For some reason the pictures I took came out better on the D5000. Both cameras felt great, I once accidentally dropped the d5000 lens first into a patch of soft dirt/sand and the lens stopped zooming in and out. Another difference I noticed was the shutter sounds. The d5000 sounded old school, more of a mechanical sound, were as the Canon had a digital shutter sound.

Either way, you'll be happy with either one, I'd get the one that costs less and invest that into another lens.
