The best 5 beers you ever had

:drinking:
I thought I'd make a list of just the best 5 beers I have ever had. Since I've had a whole lot (!!) it's hard to whittle it down to just 5. I've had some very expensive beers, but they don't make the list! Some are just regular thirst-quenchers and some are more serious.

I'd love to hear what are yours.

1. Erdinger Kristallklaar
2. Tusker Export
3. Baltika 5 Export
4. Pliny the Elder
5. Dinkerlaker Dark

Some from memories that I get from where I drank them and who I was with, some from taste and quality. Most are readily available too. In no particular order.

Plzensky Prazdroj/Pilsner Urquell (vom Fass in Prague)
Julius Echter Dunkel Weizen - Great Hefe, first had in Wurzburg
Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA - Just damn good IPA
Carlsberg Elephant (from the tap at the brewery/Copenhagen)
Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout - velvet creamy

Yeah, they vary quite a bit, and ask me at a different time of year, and it will differ, but those are what I can come up with right now.

I can't stomach IPAs but Blue Moon is right on for a Toronto brewed Belgium Style Wheat...

Larryn, I wish had read about the Julius Echter Dunkel Weizen, but I was in Wurzburg a few months ago and went to this lovely local microbrewery with large copper vats. I wish I could remember the name of the beer I had there :-(
We rented a large airtight bottle from them and made it a ritual to go them in the evening and get it topped up for some very memorable and long nights!

Could it be Georg Wolf? I drank their hefe all the time when I was there 22 years ago (how could I be that OLD???). I've never been able to find it here. Julius Echter is very good too, though.

Would you believe I JUST finished my last bottle of Julius Echter Dunkelweizen - like 5 minutes ago? Back to the topic...

1) Maibock from Selin's Grove Brewing Co (local brewpub)
2) Dogfish head 90 minute IPA
3) the aforementioned Georg Wolf hefe (though my memory is a little hazy of that one as it was so long ago and I was 17, so what did I know - I was just happy it wasn't Schmidt's :wink
4) Selin's Grove "Krippel" - Kriek mixed half & half with Trippel
5) I don't know...

there are so many great beers I've tried - I really can't commit to one - the craft beer movement is so incredible right now - I really think the US is the best place for a beer lover to be - available beer styles are not constrained by geography and there's an enormous amount of brewing creativity out there.

btw - if anyone lives anywhere near or passes through the central Susquehanna Valley of PA (US 11/15), do yourself a favor and stop by Selin's Grove Brewing Co. in Selinsgrove, PA - it's made several top 100 lists of places to have a beer (actually 13th on one). It's in the basement of a 17th century stone house so the atmosphere is awesome, there are generally at least 8 of their beers on tap and the beer ranges from very good to "Oh my God!" I have no affilitation other than living 8 miles away. I'm so spoiled - I go to other brewpubs when I travel and every one of them seems so pedestrian compared with Selin's Grove

The beer I first remember drinking; getting hits off my dad's can (Schaeffer, IIRC) at my Uncle's house in Long Island as a youngster in 1965.

The fist Berliner Weisse I had (probably at it's base a Schultheiss) in Berlin in 1968. Underage? I could put my elbows on the bar. ; -)

The beer from the keg on my wedding day (shared with my wife and I suspect it was Pabst, but I don't remember much about that. ; -)

The Warsteiners I shared with friends a few years back at a buddy's funeral (one with race cars in the funeral procession).

The draws I bought at Kelly's Westport Inn for my daughter and I when she turned 21 two years ago.

Ahaha, Pabst Blue Ribbon. That stuff just never gets old. Do you remember how much the keg was?

1. Dogfish Head Raison D'Etre
2. Ayinger Celebrator Doppelbock
3. Paulaner Salvator Doppelbock
4. Sam Smith's Imperial Stout
5. Young's Double Chocolate Stout Float (over vanilla ice cream). Don't question it, just do it. It's to die for.

These are the beers I drink most often. During the hottest of the summer months, I generally go for Modelo Especial or Shiner 99.
