Not just Jiffy Lube. Your mortgage broker, real estate agent, lawyer, gardener etc. General problem with society. Unfortunately cars affect almost all of us.
One way to help with these type of automotive problems is to get rid of the flat rate system. Have techs paid hourly by the dealership and then have the dealership charge customers flat rate. This will cut into the dealership owners profits and they won't do it. But it would be in the customers best interest.

Oil Change Sacm

Just saw this, Shocking, ofcourse bad service but regardless you pay for something even if cheap you dont expect to pay for nothing, you are still paying a franchise that might give it some credibility for being known for a service, cheap or not, no one expects this

That's why I do all my own work in-house because I have a 20x20 garage, alot of tools that I use to work on aircrafts too, air compressor, air tools...etc
And I do most of the work myself...saves me time and $$$ since my bro works for auto parts store and I get parts at cost thru him.

The only time I need to use a shop is either BMW for warrenty work or I go to a tire shop with wheels removed from the car and with new tires from tirerack.com

I always request to have my old tires returned because I'm not paying the goddamn $2.50 NY fee for per tire disposal when I can cut it up myself and dispose it...
Every tire shop in NY state metro area has about at least $40 markup over tirerack.com

I take my Integra for oil changes.. I stand in front of my car and watch them do the oil changes. I always ask to see the old filter and drain plug. But after seeing this shit, I will take my car somewhere else..

You guys shouldn't be surprised. An yes dealers do it. As a matter of fact they're one of the worst places that do stuff like this. They have to meet their quotas like everyone else. You should do what you can yourself and mark pieces that you think should be replaced. Sharpie marker and a line usually do the trick.

Case in point, Westchester BMW in NY...

Dad brought his '97 Z3 roadster there for a oil change, last one before the free maintennace plan ran out for his car...upon the next oil change I take the oil filter cap off and find there's no oil filter in there!

The service dept and the tech that did the oil change (as stated on the service sheet) got a earful from my dad on the showroom floor

I avoid them from that day on.

One day I went there just for kicks to get a price on a E90, they wee the most expensive of all the local dealers here...figures.

File this under "No Shit"

My brother once worked at Jiffy Lube. He has absolutely no formal training or mechanical aptitude whatsoever. THESE ARE NOT REAL MECHANICS.

These places pay shit and have absolutely no hiring standards. After seeing some of these knuckleheads in action I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find out they're also stoned out their minds working on cars.

You get screwed one way or another. It is just luck. The 10 minute place that I go to for my oil change is a patient of mine. I take care of him, he takes care of my car. Either way, I always watch and only get oil change. I don't even bother with vacuum, tires, or anything else. Oil and filter. That's it. I got a complimentary car wash at the car dealership once and they scratched the wood trim with the abrasive vacuum hose (car was only a couple hundred miles old). Worse, they backed the car out with the door open and bent the door backwards (1000 mile car). Oh, they also rotated my asymetrical staggered IS350 wheels. You get messed up service at the dealer and you get messed up service at the cheap places. I just came back from NTB - the new kid (was being trained at the time) couldn't remove the tire off my rim if his life depended on it. Fortunately, somehow, they didn't break off the TPMS or scratch the rim - but he didn't lube the tire well enough so they had to WAY overpressure it to seat the bead - I'm surprised the tire didn't explode. Sometimes I suspect the MB dealer my father goes just breaks things on purpose so he needs more work. My father went for a battery change on his S500, they change batt but forget to reset some stuff. Navi doesn't work suddenly and now they want 3500 to fix navi. Oh, better yet - they change the display because the speedo stopped working and they accidentally add another 0 to the odometer so now it says 1/2 million miles instead of 50K miles and all sorts of CEL and service lights are on now.

This kind of crap happens everywhere though. Do you think when you go in for surgery, there is no scam? My wife is a RN and she says there is a doctor that she used to work with that was part of a small group that worked together to scam patients. One doctor would do all the work - the other one or two would literally come in and say hello, and leave and the patient and insurance would get a bill for three doctors. The patients are old cold - what do they know? They scratched each others' backs.

All this boils down to ethics and living life honestly and truthfully. Hopefully, you will be lucky and won't be scammed too much in your life.
