The money would be less important than what sort of racing resume you could produce. This car's a sales tool and I imagine only offered to those who can produce results with it. But yeah, it would amazing to show up with an ALMS car to your local trackday!

That motor work is prolly in the 50 - 70K range itself! Race motors are typically only good for 10-20 hours or so as well, if that...depends how pumped they are. F1 engines are good for about 10 hours max. Even the GT3 CUP motors advice a total rebuild before 100 hours, and those aint even a full blown race motor.
If you wanted to "duplicate" the car, it would be $$$$. As another posted commented, the old adage holds true. If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

My guess is that the cost of a street M3 would pay for the braking system on the ALMS Racer.

well.. comparing it to its competition... that is Factory built racecars you can buy.... like the F430 GT2 car and the 997 GT3 RSR....
the Ferrari is 600k.... thats just the car.... sitting on your shop floor... prob another 400k will get you what you need to go racing... the Porsche is around 400k..... but you will need to buy the new 4.0l motor and wiring harness which is another 200k.... then u might as well have bought the Ferrari.... the thing about the BMW is.... its not a customer car type situation.. its a factory supported team one off deal (for now at least)... so Rahal built the car from the ground up... my dad was in his shop a couple weeks ago... snuk me some picture messages of the M3 and some of there shop... as they are a little bit secretive about it.... they will have well over 1 mil into the car once its finished.... they are building each piece of it pretty much in house.... talking about motors... like i said before.. the RSR motor is 125k..... and around 70k to do a rebuild.. which you would need every other race to be competitive... also.. just to give you guys an idea about running costs.... on a private track day.. (not race weekend)... a ALMS GT2 car costs about 10k to run a hour..... Engine wear is the main hit.... plus the 3k set of tires... the 90 liters of fuel brake wear and such.... So... you cant even buy this BMW right now... but one MABY will be for sale one day.... depending on how it does in GT2.... it could go for 500k to 750.. and will be totally obsolete at that point.... the work that goes into these cars by the team is truly amazing... and i have personal experience with one of Rahals 997 RSR's... and know what he did to it.. after it we delivered to them.. (already a haul ass machine).. but they improved it even more.. so i kinda know what work is going into this M3.. and i also know that GT2 teams around the paddock are a lil scared... |

I'll bet you could come up with a streetable facsimile for about $100k-$150k. But, some of that will be due to the offset of selling off proably about 40% of the content of your stock M3. You will basically strip the car down to a shell and part out everything but the major drivetrain components, some suspension pieces, some basic interior parts and some electronics. You will not end up with a true race car perhaps, but if built correctly, you will have something that beats out a stock M3 by a wide margin. However, this is not something that would be done on your free weekends, you'd need to take it to an experienced race shop for most of the work and it would likely be a year long project. Also, it would probably never be technically legal on California streets due to emissions tests.
