2009 370Z

Obviously the new 3.7 liter in the G37 will be dropped into the next Z car, that was a given and no-brainer.
But Edmunds reports, based on spy photog pics, that the new car apparently is getting a bit smaller and therefore probably lighter.

What I don't get is that Edmunds seems to think the new 370Z will have less than the 330 hp given to the G37.
I think they are assbackwards. I think the 370Z will either have ths same 330 hp rating or more likely slightly more.

If they can drop 100-150 pounds from the current 350Z, plus add 30 hp and some other tuning modifications.
That would be a pretty sweet sportscar for $30-32K

My crystal ball says Nissan will offer 2 models:
a detuned version of the G37 engine in the Z with 315
a detuned TT engine from the GTR with 400hp

That wouldn't be a bad combo, but I doubt it.
"Detuning" a turbocharged car really doesn't work. Because all that is necessary is a "retuning" of it's ECU to bring it back up to "normal" and match the GT-R's output.
Nissan would never allow the 370Z to match it's new upcoming flagship and legendary iconic "super" car.

What Nissan needs is an entry level V6.
Say a 3.0 liter with about 225 hp.

Then they could make a "base" 300Z that sells for $25-26K
They could also drop that engine into the base Altima and keep the 2.5 liter for the Sentra.

The Z wouldn't compete with the GTR regardless of whether or not it had similar HP. It's the same argument that everyone on this forum uses about the 335 and M3 and it still isn't true. There is a lot more to a car than a horsepower rating.

that was my thought also. They could give it a more restrictive intake, exhaust and ecu. IMO its ok if customers are able to make the 350 almost as fast as a gtr by performing aftermarket modifications with $3500.

I agree.

And, who cares if a 370z or lets say, a 335i coupe, can't handle like the GTR or E46/E92 M3. After all, the probability/frequency of a serious track visit in any of these cars by the general and even enthusiast crowd is slim. Therefore, if you can merge onto the highway going 75 mph in your $70k E92 M3 while I merge on going 60 mph in my $45k 335i coupe, I say that you have completely thrown your money away.

BTW, for $70k, I would rather get something more classy/higher end than a 'souped-up' 3 series like the M3.

I read an article (I think it was autoweek) about the new 370z, and it mentioned that Nissan will also offer a smaller car with a historical name, the 240z. This kind of goes along with your suggestion of a base z.

Now that you've gotten me all excited this better be true
