Destination India on a constant path of positive evolution

One of the most significant trends to emerge in the financial services industry over the last decade has been the pursuit of global sourcing strategies by global financial institutions, in other words offshore outsourcing.

Offshore outsourcing has been enabled by advances in technology and the processes dependent on it. Offshoring is now a regular feature of business operation of many global financial institutions.

Project transparency, strong legal intellectual property system, sophisticated communications infrastructure, along highly competitive professional salary levels and office accommodation costs are some of the determining factors for deciding offshore locations. India offers all of the above features in addition to others. India as an offshore outsource destination is in a constant path of positive evolution.

In the eighties, several global banking institutions began setting up captive IT centers of excellence in offshore locations such as Mumbai and Bangalore, in India. IT systems maintenance and application development were the forte of these centers. The knowledge base and skill-sets in these centers quickly disseminated within the domestic IT communities giving rise to third-party offshore IT service providers.

The emergence of third-party service providers of IT Enabled Services activities (ITES) and eventually of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) are the byproducts and results of the initial captive centers set up in the Indian metros.

These value-added activities which require sophisticated platforms and highly skilled staff are the high-end knowledge-based activities. The availability of skilled personnel is one of India’s primary advantages as an offshoring hub. There are significantly more people employed in India’s outsource service centers than in most other countries.

India’s workforce is highly educated with almost 50 per cent having a tertiary qualification. A good part of the workforce undertakes post-graduate and other professional studies at this level. This ensures the development of high level conceptual, analytical and research skills within the Indian workforce.
