Hopefully this won't get thread jacked

I'm curious how all these net-detectives do it.
some guy posts on a forum super anonymously and they dig up his entire past, life, address, etc... and totally pwn him..

how do they do it?

hmm.. I guess...
just tried it on you and it works well

but try it on someone with a very common nickname like mine..
you can't come up with much... Comet will give you more astrology pages then things about me. And I have a lot of information put up

say someone who has a nickname like "BMWboy" or whatever and has absolutely no info in his profile page.
how do u dig it up?

I'm not trying to be anonymous though, so of course it works well on me. If I really wanted to be anonymous I could be. If I person really wants to be anonymous they can hide their true identity almost completely.


Pick a random nickname from dictionary:

$ perl -le 'srand; rand $. < 1 and $word = $_ while <>; print $word' /usr/share/dict/words 
niobium

Anonymize your IP address:

$ torify firefox &

That should suffice for the vast majority of cases. Go to www.whatsmyip.org every time you fire up a Tor connection just to make sure your real IP address is properly masked.

EDIT: Of course safe browsing and not divulging personal information also are big factors.

Search around for BMWboy, or give up. You could possibly get an IP address and general area if you were willing to risk jail time. Other than that, search around but don't count on anything.

With images, these tricks can help.

1. Look at the name of the image itself. e.g. joebday.jpg might indicate that the name of the person in the image is named Joe, or at least attended someone named Joe's birthday party.

2. Examine EXIF data within the image, if applicable.

3. Examine the actual image itself (meaning what it depicts). Any visual clues as to date/time/location?

4. Use TinEye.

I don't know why you need to hide your IP for pandora unless you're trying to circumvent their usage policies. Tor is not exactly designed for applications that use a lot of bandwith.

That said, go to torproject.org and download Tor for your platform. After installing it, download the TorButton extension for Firefox and install it. Start Tor, toggle the TorButton in the lower right hand corner of Firefox, and then go to whatsmyip.org.
