Thinking of trading in for a jeep wrangler unlimited
I love the look and looking for something different.
Bad idea? Has anyone done this and any words of advice? Thanks |

Why are you considering the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited specifically? Will you be using the off-road capabilities or just like the look? Go test drive one and see how you like it. Most of us will probably think you're crazy for giving up your 335i for a Jeep, but do whatever makes you happy.

At first you will probably love sitting up high, not worrying about curbing rims or scraping your bumper... But then the novelty will wear off and you will really miss the speed and power of your 335i

Those aren't typically two models that are being cross-shopped, unless you need it to go offroading I feel like you'll miss you speed machine pretty quick

Thats different alright. You have to LOVE a jeep to own one. As an addition to the stable, short distance, slow drive, go to the beach vehicle, sure. As ANYTHING else, I would not.

I had the rubicon 4door.
Really fun in the sunny weather on the beach and great for camping and rafting. Lotta cabin noise with the drop top but it comes with it of course. Fun options and the rubicon had some good power. As for fuel milage you should do some research on what best suits your budget with each model. I chose the rubicon over the unlimited for all the options and power and didnt regret doing so. I also loved how you can hose down the floor panels and theres a drain plug to let the water out. Great option for the dogs on a rainy day at the dog park |

Test drive one and see for yourself. It won't be as comfy on the highway that's for sure but do what YOU want that's the important thing. They are bad ass machines no doubt, I'm leaning towards a GC myself. Good luck.

The two vehicles couldn't be more diametrically opposite.
BMW: Powerful, smooth, refined, stellar handling, long on creature comforts. Wrangler: OK power, rough, loud, crude, tippy handling. |

A few months ago I was in the same place as you. My buddy got a Wrangler Sport and I got all excited to get one too. I put my car up for sale and everything. After a couple of weeks I realized I was absolutely crazy.
Although I still like the Wrangler a lot and my wife will be getting one soon I'll never leave my E92. |

Just bought a '13 Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited for the wife, and will be selling the 330i. I can let you know in a few weeks/months how we like it.
Go for at least a 2012. Jeep redid the interior of the Wrangler and it's very nice. They also placed a more powerful engine and 5-speed transmission in them. As said, go drive a few and see how you like them. |

Meh, I heard of worse trade-offs than this. I got nothing against Wranglers though. Pretty solid off-road buggers.

If I got an M3 or something powerful and RWD in the future I would consider an old wrangler or more specifically an old FJ Cherokee. I wouldn't buy one new. They blow for reliability.

Keep the 335 and build one of these. They're cheap as can be to mod and extremely capable off road. This is my plan! If built well it will own most jeeps!! And it doesnt cost $30,000!!!!

As others mentioned, you need to be a jeep fan to appreciate it. If looking at used then stick with 2011+ as the interior is far improved and at least tolerable from a bmw. But they really aren't meant to be cross shopped between each other.
Also the newer ones has the pentastar v6 that gives good power with a 6 speed transmission. Another thing to consider is interior noise. The roof, doors, etc can all be taken off so noise levels is similar to a soft top convertible. Also in winter you need to have the heater higher then normal to keep the cabin warm. Heat escapes easily. That being said it's a very distinctive ride and if your a fan and know what your getting into you won't be disappointed. |

Jeep's are fun, but it's a different kind of fun. I do some jeeping when I go to Arizona. It's fun. Slow, rock-crawling kind of fun. I ran into a guy last week who just dropped in a 6.4L Hemi. It was chipped and modded, and he said it put 550hp to the rear wheels. But it didn't seem to get him over the rocks any quicker than the rest of us!
If you are going to do any kind of offroading, be sure to get the Rubicon package...that's the best bang for your buck. The newer Rubi's have the swaybar release and diff locks buttons on the dash, plus a bit of light duty undercarriage protection. Of course, you can mod these things all day long. I have great respect for Jeeps. They are awesome machines. But in their own element.
