I'll echo the suggestions to skip chains (especially mass chains) and definately skip fast food. If you want to do a chain to be safe, do something like PF Chang's if you have it. At least they have good service and it's date casual.
Fast food is just horrible and should generally be avoided at all costs, let aone for dates. Red Lobster..Olive Garden...Applebees...and the like are right up there with fast food. I can't help but think of the guy who trys to bribe Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmour with "going to The Red Lobster". It's not seafood. Find a local place with quality food. Remember quality doesn't have to mean $$$$.

here is San Diego I would go to either "Japengos or PF Changs" or Italian. It never fails I guess..
