Dude. If you have any feelings of doubt, whatsoever, don't do it. Home is a huge purchase. Even if you buy it at 50% of its value. The price that you bought it for will be listed and you have now affected the market. Any home that sells on your block with similar features will now have a new price to work from. So don't think that you can buy it at that rate and automatically be able to turn around and get more. That ain't happening. |

No way. Nothing wrong with being smart and buying a short sale, but come on, there is blood on the carpet, a giant hole in the wall and family stuff all over the place. Not to mention it bothers your wife. Also, the fact that you're even posting this should answer your question.

Shit's too weird for me man...
I don't think I would ever buy a home that someone has lived in before, let alone blown their brains all over the wall in. I would probably just save my money until I could have one built. |

one of my friend's lived in a house that was previously owned by drug dealers. his family got it for a great deal cause swat blasted the previous owner or something. never saw no ghosts. was a great chill house. we used to meet there all the time in high school. then again, i never saw any traces of the death and neither did my friend.

OP, to relate it to something else....it's like having a salvage title for a car (on a much larger scale). That will stick around. You can try to find work arounds, but if the new owner finds out, they aren't going to just let it slip by.....they're going to sue. Ultimately it's your call though, long term you could still make money (once the 10-20 years has gone by and the death didn't happen like last week), but you'd have to hold onto it for a bit. As the saying goes 'if its too good to be true'.... Last edited by Freakazoid; 01-10-2011 at 01:12 PM.. |

Wow, I really didn't expect to be in the minority in this regard. I mean, I get the argument that if your wife will hate it, don't do it. But being worried about a dude who died after swallowing a shotgun cartridge? I'd be worried if he didn't die...

+1! I've been watching shows like that all the time so I think it would be cool to own a "haunted" house, but yes if your family doesn't dig it keep looking.

My Grandpa bought a house that someone killed themself in. They turned the car on in the garage and let it idle till they were killed by the carbon monoxide. When he bought the house (1 person removed from the suicide) there was a giant sticker on the inside of the garage door that said "WARNING: Do not idle vehicle with garage door in the closed position!" I always thought that was kinda creepy, but there was nothing wrong with the house or any ghosts or anything.

Don't buy the house. Even if you're not superstitious it will bother you and catch up with your family at some point.
Examples: You may have friends and/or relatives uncomfortable visiting you. The story will slip out to your kids and they'll be unnerved. The circumstances of the house's history will force you to keep it a secret. You'll have to keep track of knows and who doesn't know. You have a young family and you should have everything feel fresh and free of any weirdness. 50% off the normal price in this market is not a big deal. You can find another home for another good deal.

Now that you have the thought inside your head that it might be haunted, you will have all sorts of signs/feelings.

Been in several houses where someone bought the farm, wife works for a restoration company that used to do work for the LA housing authority been in some really nice places . Never felt anyone was there or haunted. As far as disclosure goes, that is sate by state and in Cali you must disclose if anyone has died in the residence in the last 3 years but it's a yes or no question with no disclosure as to how they died. I'd check with a licensed realtor in your area as to what needs to be disclosed. Bottom line if anyone, especially your wife has second thoughts then simply walk. Probably most prudent move would be use it as a income property but that does not solve nor fit your needs.
