In Europe, it's called sharing. My spouse doesn't cook, shop, or stay at home with the kids, but in return I handle all matters with cars, all the above, and he makes a little more than I do, since my money is mainly just sitting still.

There will not be a day when he will need a shirt ironed to work, he's happy with T-shirts, and if something would change, he too went to army, so he can handle it. As a matter of fact, I have not done a load of laundry in the whole time we have been together, and it's safe to say, that if we go apart ever, I'm hiring a maid for my home.

Now, the list I do: I do all the shopping for the family, cars ( i mean everything car related), finances, mortgages, i raise the offspring, renovate, cook (extremely well, I might ad), savings, budgets, inheritance issues, and my favorite: get the sports car for myself.

All don't have to earn a sent for a honest days work, but what bugs me, is that it's one or the other here. No man will ever be my master, but in return I will make sure, that I will not be the commander either. We are together, cause we wanted to be. Money or gender has nothing to do with this.

I so want to give the long version but here is the short version I had 1.8 Million in the bank at 21 and was homeless at 31 now another 12 or so years later uh well I think I am clawing my way back to lower middle class (whatever that is these days) but you know what when I was poor I found out who my true friends & family were and being self made it was my money to blow anyway.

So if I were ever to find an angel that made the money I would cook clean wash her M and massage her feet every day I LOVE WOMEN and mother earth yet again BMW's & women rule the world because you have incredible balance and look great and perform incredibly especially when driven in anger!!!

A tad interested in how you got the $1.8m in the first place and how you pissed it away.

$5 million is the new $1 million these days, anyways. $1.8M is a nice chunk of change but it's hardly enough to deem "wealthy" in 2014. But, that being said, $1.8M is enough to sustain a lower middle class lifestyle in perpetuity assuming you're alone or at most you have a household of two. Conservatively I'd say $1.8M is good enough to generate maybe $30,000/year comfortably (adjusted for inflation) in perpetuity without really eating into the principal. Of course if you have a windfall with the market for a couple of years and your $1.8M grows to $2.5M, $3M+ that's when you can start to spend a bit more frivolously, but I'm being really conservative with my estimate.

I've always been taught to save and invest as if I'm going to get my head ripped off in the market at least once in my lifetime.

I'm hoping 2008 was it for me. We're pouring a lot into retirement savings now and if the market crashes again right as I want to retire, I'll go ballistic. Scares the shit out of me sometimes.

My wife doesn't make as much as me, but we don't really think about it. We just pay our bills and pay for our home/cars and we live life comfortably.

Same here. We have a couple 70+ years olds at my office stuffing envelopes. I hope to god I don't end up in that position. I look at them and it's a real eye opener.

My wife could make upwards of $100k as an RN, MSN and believe me as soon as all 3 kids are in all day school she'll be gettin' her ass to workin'.

My wife has been at the hospital going on 10 years. She was disappointed that with bonus she raked in $92K last year. She was looking forward to finally joining the six figure club.

It's very real when you see it for yourself, huh?

Suzy Orman says everyone needs 1 mil. in their 401k by age 50. How much you bet most couples do not have 2 mil. in their 401ks by age 50?

Let's just say a couple has 140k combined income, very modest but lower middle class. Do you think that if they lease cars from age 22 to 50, they will have 2 mil. in their accounts?

My attitude is to live like you're saving up for a house. Not as if you are hungry, but almost. Because a house cannot be fudged, most people will never pay off their dream house.

At least with the E46, avg. 3 series driver was male and had a salary of 140k. Today, I guess, with leasing, people not even making 100k are blowing 52k for a 4 cyl BMW (they don't own the 52k car, but they're driving them).

All kidding aside, it's amazing how many people think 100k/yr. is a "lot" of bank, man.

Be honest. How would you feel if your wife’s W2 put yours to shame?
Without reading any other posts here, honestly, I'd feel perfectly fine and very supportive!
I mean why not??? Your wife, the woman you chose to spend your life with happens to be smart, hard working and compensated justly for it.

My wife has out earned me on occasion (over 13yrs) and that's awesome!

Carry on and be happy she's with you and she can carry her weight. It takes 2.

Lower middle class?? Where do you live?

I feel bad for all the families making 70K a year. I guess they must be living on welfare and eating mayonnaise sandwiches.

Location location location! In some places 100k is like 300k in some its 40k. Demographics only go so far. You need to compare them to your COLA index.
